Liverpool is set to pursue a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window following a failed attempt during the summer.

Liverpool is aiming to acquire a defensive midfielder during the January transfer window after failing to do so in the summer.

In the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke noted that the club recognizes January is “not the ideal market” for significant signings.

Arne Slot had expressed a desire for a defensive midfielder throughout the summer transfer period, but the Premier League club was unable to finalize a deal.

Liverpool came close to signing Martin Zubimendi, who ultimately chose to remain at Real Sociedad despite the club agreeing to his £51.3 million release clause.

As the transfer window closed without further options emerging, Liverpool has decided to wait and evaluate potential targets in January.

The Reds are keen to explore available options, as Slot seeks to enhance his midfield lineup.

Football Insider previously indicated that acquiring a defensive midfielder is a “priority” for Slot, a goal that will carry over into the upcoming transfer window.

With no new signings made in the summer, Liverpool will need to depend on the current midfield roster available to Slot.

Reports suggest that Liverpool received numerous loan inquiries for Stefan Bajcetic, but opted to retain him since they had not secured any replacements.

Defensively, the team has performed well this season, achieving clean sheets in their first two Premier League matches.

Slot’s squad has secured victories against Brentford and Ipswich Town, both ending in 2-0, and will face Manchester United next on Sunday, September 1.

In other developments, Trent Alexander-Arnold is reportedly feeling ‘unhappy’ at Liverpool following a disagreement with Arne Slot.
