Slot commends Alisson following the goalkeeper’s crucial role in Liverpool’s victory over Girona…
Liverpool manager Arne Slot lauded Alisson’s performance following the goalkeeper’s return from injury, which was instrumental in the team’s Champions League victory over Girona on Tuesday.
After Liverpool’s win against Girona, Slot lauds Alisson for his outstanding performance as the returning goalkeeper.
Alisson, who had been sidelined with a hamstring injury since October 5, showcased his skills with several crucial saves, reaffirming his status as Slot’s preferred choice despite Caoimhin Kelleher’s commendable performances in his absence.
His efforts were pivotal in preserving Liverpool’s unbeaten streak, culminating in Mohamed Salah’s penalty securing the win.
“Alisson certainly didn’t appear to be coming back from a two-month layoff,” Slot remarked.
“I humorously suggested to the players that perhaps they were testing his readiness by allowing him to make so many saves.”
“But he demonstrated exactly why I consider him our number one.”
Defender Andy Robertson echoed Slot’s sentiments, praising Alisson while expressing concern over the number of opportunities Girona created.
Alisson made notable saves against Alejandro Frances and Miguel Gutierrez in the first half.
“Given his time away, we needed to see if he was out of practice, and he clearly wasn’t,” Robertson stated.
“However, we need to exert more control. We can’t afford to leave so many openings; our pressing needs to be more effective, particularly in the first half, which felt too chaotic for our liking.”
Slot also acknowledged Girona’s quality, noting that they posed significant challenges for Liverpool, who handed Girona their fifth defeat in six matches, largely due to Alisson’s contributions.
“I genuinely feel for Girona; they are a high-caliber team and deserve more than the three points they currently have,” Slot commented.
“They executed a solid game plan today, but we were fortunate to have an exceptional goalkeeper.”
In addition, Salah marked a milestone by scoring his 50th Champions League goal, tying him with Filippo Inzaghi as the 10th highest scorer in the competition’s history.
The winger’s contract expires at the conclusion of the season, yet his 16 goals in all competitions have played a crucial role in Liverpool’s outstanding performance during the first half of the season.
