Romano: Arsenal is currently engaged in ‘active discussions’ to acquire a ‘world-class’ player valued at £52 million…
According to Romano, Arsenal is in the midst of active negotiations to secure the signing of a ‘world-class’ talent priced at £52 million.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal is currently engaged in active negotiations to sign Mikel Merino, the Real Sociedad midfielder, this summer.
The London club has already reached an agreement on personal terms with the Spanish international. Romano indicates that Arsenal is now focusing on establishing a payment structure for the player.
Both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have shown interest in Merino; however, they have been made aware of the midfielder’s preference to join Arsenal during this transfer window.
Merino’s contract includes a release clause set at €60 million (£52 million), but Arsenal is looking to negotiate a transfer fee slightly above €25 million (£21 million) for the 28-year-old.
Arsenal primarily relied on Declan Rice and Kai Havertz in the no.8 position during the previous season.
However, with the addition of Merino, Rice may take on more defensive responsibilities in the upcoming term.
Merino has mainly operated as a central midfielder, excelling in this role due to his impressive aerial ability, strong work ethic, and capacity to contribute to goals.
Last season, he led Europe’s top-5 leagues in duel victories and averaged over six recoveries per league match. His defensive attributes are well-suited for the Premier League.
Kieran Tierney has described Merino as world-class, highlighting his talent for both scoring and assisting.
He recorded 13 goal contributions in the last campaign, and with more creative teammates at Arsenal, he could potentially enhance his performance further.
Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, may view him as a direct rival to Kai Havertz; however, both players could also complement each other if Havertz is chosen to spearhead the attack instead of Gabriel Jesus.
This presents a favorable dilemma for the manager. To compete effectively and challenge Manchester City for the league title, Arsenal requires enhanced quality and depth within their squad.
The club has already secured a valuable addition in defender Riccardo Calafiori, and the inclusion of Merino would further strengthen the team as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League season.
