Rescheduled match between Everton and Liverpool, originally postponed due to Storm Darragh, will provide Arsenal with a renewed advantage in the title race…
The Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool has been postponed due to Storm Darragh, which has raised safety concerns.
Following the postponement of the Everton-Liverpool match due to Storm Darragh, the newly set date will grant Arsenal an additional opportunity to strengthen their title ambitions.
Originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Goodison Park, the match will not take place as planned.
A statement from the Premier League indicated that a Safety Advisory Group meeting, which included officials from both clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council, concluded that the match should be postponed due to the ongoing amber severe wind warning, which is in effect until 06:00 GMT on Sunday.
This postponement presents an opportunity for teams trailing Liverpool in the standings to narrow the gap.
Following Liverpool’s recent 3-3 draw against Newcastle United, the lead was reduced from nine points to seven.
Should Arsenal or Chelsea, or both, secure victories in their matches on Sunday, Liverpool’s advantage could shrink to just four points, although they will still have a game in hand.
However, the rescheduled match will be challenging, especially considering the current form of the Toffees.
Additionally, fitting this match into Liverpool’s already packed schedule will pose further difficulties later in the season.
The busy festive period offers no midweek slots for the Reds before the new year.
There is a single midweek opportunity at the beginning of January, but if Liverpool progresses past Southampton in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, that date will be occupied by the first leg of the semi-final, with the second leg scheduled for February 8.
Liverpool will have Premier League and Champions League matches scheduled during midweek slots in the coming weeks, followed by a winter break at the beginning of February. The next opportunity for a midweek fixture is particularly appealing.
The earliest chance to reschedule the Merseyside Derby, aside from the midweek at the start of January, falls in the week of February 17, immediately after the winter break.
The Reds are set to face Wolves at Anfield on Saturday, December 15, pending any changes for television coverage, and they could potentially meet Everton at Goodison Park on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
This situation is crucial in the context of the Premier League title race and is of particular interest to Arsenal, as it would result in consecutive challenging away games for Liverpool.
Should the Everton match be rescheduled to that midweek, Liverpool would then travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City on February 22, although it is highly likely that this match will be shifted to Sunday, February 23, for television purposes.
If the fixture is indeed moved, it will represent a significant week for the Reds and could play a critical role in the title race, which Arsenal may be monitoring closely as the season progresses.
