According to reports, Liverpool’s Arne Slot is planning to replace Darwin Nunez with a striker from the Premier League during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Nunez, who joined Liverpool for a club-record fee of £85m in 2022, has had a decent spell at the club, scoring 33 goals and providing 17 assists in 96 appearances across various competitions.

In his final season under Jurgen Klopp, the 24-year-old contributed significantly with 18 goals and 13 assists in 54 matches, helping Liverpool secure a third-placed finish in the Premier League and win the EFL Cup.

However, Nunez’s form dipped towards the end of the 2023-24 campaign, as he failed to find the back of the net in his last 10 appearances.

His wastefulness in front of goal resulted in him losing his regular starting position in the team during the final weeks of the season. As a result, Liverpool are now considering bringing in a new striker to replace Nunez and bolster their attacking options.

Nunez still has four years left on his contract at Anfield, but there are rumors of a potential move to Barcelona in the summer.

Slot eyeing summer move for Watkins

Reports from The Sun suggest that Liverpool are uncertain about Nunez’s future and he might be sold to make room for a key target of new manager Arne Slot.

It is believed that Slot is interested in bringing Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins to Liverpool, as he is a player that the Reds’ new boss admires.

Watkins recently signed a long-term contract extension in October, committing him to Villa Park until 2028, and currently has no immediate plans to depart the club.

Watkins expressed his satisfaction with his current situation, stating, “I believe this is the ideal place for me to showcase my football skills, and I still have many goals to accomplish here.”

Despite this, Liverpool is reportedly gearing up to pursue the 28-year-old forward, who excelled in scoring during the previous season with Villa, securing a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and securing a spot in the upcoming Champions League.

Watkins netted 27 goals and contributed 13 assists in 53 matches for Villa in the 2023-24 season, including 19 goals in 37 Premier League appearances. Since his arrival at Villa in 2020, the former Brentford player has accumulated a total of 70 goals and 26 assists in 169 games.

His outstanding performances have earned him a spot in Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for Euro 2024, and it would not be surprising if he secures a place in the final squad for the tournament in Germany this summer.
