Liverpool has approved the transfer of Fabio Carvalho to fellow Premier League club Brentford as Arne Slot works on refining his squad.
The club has initiated the process to acquire Anthony Gordon after finalizing the £20 million sale of Carvalho to Brentford.
This transaction could ultimately reach £27.5 million with add-ons, and Liverpool will receive a 17.5% sell-on clause.
Carvalho was signed by Liverpool from Fulham for an initial fee of £5 million in 2022, and due to a clause in the agreement, Fulham is entitled to 20% of the profit from his sale.
Reports suggest that Carvalho has been presented with a five-year contract with Brentford, marking the end of his two-year tenure at Liverpool.
Liverpool previously rejected a £15 million offer from newly-promoted Southampton for Carvalho, who had a standout performance while on loan at Hull City towards the end of last season.
Although he caught Arne Slot’s attention upon his return to Anfield for pre-season, it was unlikely he would see significant playing time this season.
The Portuguese player has expressed a clear preference for playing in the number 10 role and has shown willingness to consider a transfer away from Anfield, where the club is not inclined to permit another loan move for him.
As they work towards finalizing their first summer signing, Slot is actively restructuring his squad.
To generate additional funds, it is essential to offload several peripheral players, including Tyler Morton, Owen Beck, James McConnell, Bobby Clark, and Ben Doak.
Regarding Gordon, he remains a primary target for Liverpool, having nearly secured a deal for him earlier this summer.
Newcastle, facing financial challenges and difficulties in meeting Profit and Sustainability regulations, reached out to Liverpool about a potential transfer. However, discussions fell through due to Newcastle’s insistence on including defender Jarell Quansah in the agreement.
If Newcastle decides to sell Gordon in the coming weeks, they are expected to demand a substantial fee. Meanwhile, Magpies manager Eddie Howe is keen to retain the talented winger.
“If I had three arms, I would embrace Anthony without hesitation,” he stated. “He is a crucial component of our efforts. Why would we consider parting with any of our talented young players?”
In the meantime, Gordon is receptive to the idea of joining his childhood club, and it has been reported that he spoke about the potential move with his England teammates during their training camp at the Euros in Germany.
The funds generated from Carvalho’s exit could be essential for Liverpool as they pursue the signing of Gordon before the transfer window closes.
