Régis Le Bris gives an update on Ian Poveda and elaborates on the reasons for his delayed Sunderland debut.

Le Bris emphasized that the club will not rush Poveda, indicating that he may not be heavily involved in the upcoming Championship campaign opener against Cardiff City.

Poveda recently joined Sunderland as a free agent after his contract with Leeds United expired, and he also had a successful loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season.

However, due to an injury towards the end of the previous campaign, Poveda is still working on his match fitness and is slightly behind his teammates.

Despite traveling with the team for their final pre-season match against Marseille, Poveda was not included in the matchday squad.

Le Bris explained the situation, shedding light on why Poveda has yet to make his debut.

Le Bris mentioned that he joined the team three weeks later than the others, so he requires time to enhance his physical condition.

It is uncertain when he will be ready, as it is crucial to establish a solid base with him to ensure his availability throughout the season.

Rushing his progress is not an option. Pierre Ekwah, despite lagging in match fitness, is set to be in the running this weekend as Le Bris confirmed his return to training yesterday after recovering from a back injury.

Unfortunately, Jenson Seelt, Niall Huggins, Nectar Triantis, and Dan Ballard are currently out of action and will not be available for the upcoming match in South Wales.
