The Premier League has issued a statement regarding the decision not to award Liverpool a penalty against Newcastle.

The Premier League has issued a statement regarding Liverpool’s denied late penalty claim in their match against Newcastle.

During the thrilling 3-3 draw on Wednesday evening, Liverpool’s appeal for a penalty arose when the ball struck the hand of Newcastle defender Dan Burn in the closing moments of the match.

The Premier League has now clarified the reasoning behind the referee’s decision to deny the penalty.

As the match approached its conclusion, Liverpool was in pursuit of a winning goal after Fabian Schar had recently equalized for Newcastle.

The visitors sought a penalty after Alexis Mac Allister’s shot made contact with Burn’s hand within the penalty area. However, the referee dismissed the claims, a decision that was subsequently supported by VAR.

According to a statement from the Premier League Match Centre on X (formerly Twitter), “The refereeโ€™s decision of no penalty for a potential handball by Burn was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, which determined that his arm was positioned close to his body.”

Liverpool struggled in the first half, falling behind 10 minutes before halftime when Alexander Isak scored a brilliant goal from the edge of the box.

Curtis Jones brought Liverpool level early in the second half, but Newcastle regained the lead when Caoimhin Kelleher failed to stop Anthony Gordon’s shot.

Liverpool responded and equalized again with Mohamed Salah scoring his 10th Premier League goal of the season.

Salah appeared to have secured the win with a second goal seven minutes from time, but Schar’s late equalizer meant the match ended in a draw.

The outcome leaves Liverpool seven points ahead at the top of the table, while second-placed Chelsea secured a 5-1 victory over Southampton on the same night.

After the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his mixed emotions to Amazon Prime, stating, “We were exceptional in the second half, but our first half performance was lacking. Perhaps a 3-3 result reflects the match accurately.”

The opposing team displayed a high level of aggression, which led us to make several errors; however, we significantly improved in the second half.

I was confident that we could turn the game in our favor, as we demonstrated superior ball control.

Given the challenges we faced throughout the week, our ability to alter the course of the match is a very encouraging takeaway.

Whenever we rely on Mo Salah, he consistently delivers by finding the back of the net.

We are optimistic and anticipate that he will maintain this form for an extended period.

His performance in the second half was exceptional, and he contributed numerous remarkable moments for our team.
