Ideal for Slot: Liverpool target “player of the season” as potential replacement for Mane – analysis
The atmosphere is filled with mixed emotions among Liverpool fans as they prepare to bid farewell to Jurgen Klopp, who has led the team on an exhilarating journey over the past nine years.
Although Liverpool faced setbacks last season, Klopp and interim sporting director Jorg Schmadtke successfully reconstructed the midfield with modern components, resulting in triumph in the Carabao Cup and a commendable third-place finish in the Premier League. They were only narrowly edged out in the intense three-way title race.
Now, significant changes are underway as FSG implements comprehensive structural modifications throughout the club. Further alterations are expected during the summer transfer window, particularly in the central defense position, as well as the urgent requirement for a wide forward.
In relation to the latter, let us explore an intriguing transfer target that could potentially join Anfield. This prospect bears a striking resemblance to the astute signings made by Michael Edwards.
Liverpool, along with other clubs such as Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Newcastle United, are monitoring Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville’s situation.
If Leeds fail to secure promotion to the Premier League, Summerville will be transfer-listed for a fee exceeding £30m. Leeds, under the management of Daniel Farke, have performed exceptionally well this season despite being relegated last year.
They recently defeated Norwich City and will face either Southampton or West Bromwich Albion in the play-off final next weekend. According to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, Leeds will need to generate £100m through player sales if they do not succeed in the upcoming final.
Summerville, who was named the Championship’s “Player of the Season,” had a remarkable campaign following a promising debut season in the English top flight. One of his standout moments was scoring a late winner against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Merseyside-silencing strike occurred during the second game of a four-match scoring streak that lasted from October to November. This streak represents Summerville’s entire success in terms of scoring goals in the Premier League. However, after this streak, he went on an 18-match barren run.
Despite this, it is important to note that Summerville is only 22 years old and has utilized Leeds’ decline to further develop his skills in the forefront of the Championship. Analyst Ben Mattinson has praised him as a “monster” with “crazy” movements, likening him to a lightning bolt in transit and an elite-level forward.
Now, the question arises as to why Summerville has been named the best player of the 2023/24 season in the division. Why not Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who was a champion with Leicester City? Or why not Sammie Szmodics of Blackburn Rovers, who was the top scorer with 27 goals?
The answer lies in Summerville’s impressive individual performance throughout the season. He has scored 19 goals and provided nine assists in the league campaign. Additionally, he found the back of the net during his team’s play-off victory over the Canaries this week.
According to Sofascore, he has successfully completed 84% of his passes, generated 17 significant opportunities, and averaged 2.6 key passes, 1.4 tackles, 3.4 ball recoveries, 2.3 dribbles, and 5.8 successful duels per game.
It is evident that Liverpool has taken notice not just because of his goals and assists, but also due to the impressive statistics that indicate Summerville possesses all the qualities needed to excel at Liverpool, potentially becoming the club’s top left forward since Sadio Mane.
Why Crysencio Summerville is an Ideal Fit for Liverpool
Liverpool experienced great success with Mane, who was praised by Klopp for his exceptional level of play and world-class abilities, playing a crucial role in winning both the Premier League and Champions League titles.
Although Luis Diaz was brought in from Porto for an initial fee of £37m to replace the legendary forward, he has only managed to score 24 goals in 97 appearances. At 27 years old, he may be sold this summer to maximize profits, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested in acquiring him.
Liverpool could greatly benefit from acquiring Summerville, a player known for his relentless running and goal-scoring abilities.
This move could prove to be a strategic one for Slot, as the 46-year-old manager is likely to utilize his countryman effectively. With Summerville’s aggressive playing style, he could seamlessly fit into the team and provide the pace, power, and goal-scoring prowess that Liverpool needs.
While he may not immediately replace Mane, his potential to contribute significantly is evident from his impressive stats as one of the top attacking midfielders and wingers in his division. Exciting times ahead for Liverpool if this deal goes through.
He is also positioned in the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for progressive carries, the top 13% for successful take-ons, and the top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90. This showcases his progression-heavy style, making him an ideal fit for Liverpool and Slot’s high-intensity system.
While he may not immediately step into Mane’s role, players like Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Diogo Jota have excelled on the left and could be adjusted to Slot’s preferences.
Looking at Liverpool’s current options at left wing, excluding Diaz, each player brings a level of clinical success that can strengthen the team alongside Summerville, who will require a share of the workload.
Although they have their differences, Liverpool’s left-sided forwards share impressive finishing abilities and can be rotated interchangeably.
In other words, Slot has the potential to bring in a prolific left-winger who can enhance their style of play and create a dynamic attacking line.
This would enable Summerville to develop into a wide forward who can perform at the same level as Mane at Liverpool, without being burdened by excessive pressure at an early stage.
Liverpool is entering a transitional phase, but by making signings like Summerville, they can add that extra element to their frontline and Slot can still achieve success in their first year after Klopp.
