Carragher anticipates potential January moves for Liverpool to bolster their title ambitions.

Liverpool has made an impressive start to the season under Arne Slot.

While the disappointing defeat to Nottingham Forest in September remains a point of concern for Slot, the overall performance of his team has been commendable.

The transition following Jurgen Klopp’s departure over the summer surprised many observers.

Pundits and rival supporters likely anticipated a significant decline at Anfield, especially after Liverpool’s unexpected competitiveness in the Premier League title race last season. Few expected them to replicate that success this time around.

Although it is still early in the season and a challenging schedule lies ahead, there is reason for optimism that Slot can guide the team back into contention.

During Liverpool’s recent victory over Chelsea, former defender Jamie Carragher drew comparisons between Slot and Klopp, suggesting that the club may look to make mid-season signings to support the head coach’s efforts.

Carragher’s insights indicate that Liverpool had initially planned for more activity in the summer transfer window. Ultimately, only Federico Chiesa joined the squad, with a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili set for 2025.

The long-term strategy for Liverpool remains uncertain, particularly as improvements are still required in both defense and midfield.

There is a belief that the right acquisitions in these positions could significantly elevate Liverpool’s ambitions.

Jamie Carragher, writing for Sky Sports, suggests that if a suitable player becomes available during the winter transfer window, the club will be willing to invest to enhance their squad.

“They are very much in pursuit of the Premier League title, just as they were last season. We must not overlook that,” the pundit remarks.

“They have not made significant reinforcements. It will be intriguing to see if Liverpool decides to bring anyone in during January, especially since their summer signings were limited.

“If they believe they have a genuine chance at the title and identify a player who meets their criteria and fits their model, I think they will be prepared to spend to secure that player.”

Who might Liverpool target in January?

Liverpool has historically made some impressive signings during the January transfer window.

Players such as Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Virgil van Dijk were all acquired in January.

This illustrates that the right players can indeed be available, and if they are, Liverpool is likely to act decisively.

Currently, it is less clear who they might pursue when the transfer window reopens.

Martin Zubimendi is an intriguing option, but Ryan Gravenberch’s recent performances seem to be diminishing that possibility.

Nonetheless, Liverpool recognizes the necessity of adding a midfielder sooner rather than later, so even if Zubimendi is not the target, it is probable that a mid-season signing will be someone with a similar profile.

The club tends to keep their transfer activities discreet, so we may not have any updates until around Christmas. It would be an ideal way for Slot to kick off 2025.
