Paul Merson suggests that Arsenal’s chances of winning the title may have diminished following their match against Liverpool, leading him to revise his previous prediction…
Arsenal will be hosting Liverpool in a highly anticipated Premier League showdown on Sunday afternoon, as the Gunners aim to narrow the gap between them and the league leaders to a mere two points.
Paul Merson has revised his prediction for the highly anticipated Premier League showdown between Arsenal and Liverpool. Initially, he believed that Arsenal would emerge victorious, but after witnessing Liverpool’s dominant 4-1 triumph over Chelsea, he now foresees a 2-2 draw between the two teams.
In his Sportskeeda column, Merson emphasized the significance of this upcoming match for Arsenal, stating that it is crucial for them to secure a victory. He further emphasized that a draw would not be satisfactory either, leaving Arsenal with no choice but to give their all in this game.
“Prior to Liverpool’s dominant performance against Chelsea, I held a positive outlook for this match and believed that Arsenal would emerge victorious. However, witnessing the Reds’ exceptional display last night has altered my perspective.
Liverpool’s performance was truly remarkable, overshadowing Chelsea’s lackluster performance. In fact, Liverpool could have scored even more goals if Darwin Núñez hadn’t hit the crossbar on four occasions!”
While a draw may not be the ideal outcome for Arsenal, it is unlikely to greatly trouble Liverpool if they end up sharing the points away from home.
Liverpool and Arsenal have had some intense matches in the past, with both teams experiencing victories and defeats. In their last encounter at Anfield in December, Liverpool managed to salvage a 1-1 draw after initially falling behind.
However, the tables turned in the FA Cup third round at Emirates Stadium last month, where Liverpool emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Arteta’s team. The goals were scored by Jakub Kiwior (own goal) and Luis Díaz.
In the corresponding match of the previous season, Arsenal came out on top with a 3-2 scoreline. However, this season, it is Liverpool who seems to be in control, setting the pace as Klopp aims for a perfect ending to his remarkable journey at Anfield.
It is unclear what Merson exactly means when he states that a draw is ‘no good’ for Arsenal, or whether he believes it would eliminate Arteta’s side from the title race.
However, even if the gap remains at five points, with no further opportunities to directly take points off Liverpool, it would undoubtedly present a challenging battle for the rest of the season, relying heavily on luck.
The Gunners would undoubtedly suffer greatly from a defeat, and that is precisely what Liverpool will aim to cause. Liverpool is confident in its ability to achieve this, as it emerged victorious in the same match-up during the FA Cup just a few weeks ago.
Moreover, their recent performance in the Premier League will undoubtedly boost their morale. It is hoped that Núñez will be fit to play despite his foot injury, as his presence in training indicates a positive sign.
On the other hand, Klopp faces a challenging decision in selecting his full-backs, as it will be difficult to choose between Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez.
