James Pearce Provides Insight on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Future
According to journalist James Pearce from The Athletic, Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is highly unlikely to leave Anfield during the January transfer window.
Pearce dismisses recent speculation linking the homegrown talent to Real Madrid as “absolute nonsense.”
Since joining the first team in 2017, Alexander-Arnold has established himself as one of the premier attacking defenders globally, currently sharing the record for the most assists by a defender in Premier League history with teammate Andy Robertson.
Despite his contract expiring at the end of the season, which has raised concerns among fans about a potential move next summer, Pearce is confident that a winter transfer is not on the horizon.
Pearce: Rumors of Trent’s Move to Real Madrid Are Unfounded
During a discussion on The Athletic’s ‘Walk On’ podcast, Pearce emphasized that there is “zero chance” of Alexander-Arnold transferring in January.
While he acknowledged that clubs will monitor his situation closely, he confirmed that no contract negotiations have taken place yet, and the circumstances remain unchanged. He stated:
“There’s absolutely zero chance that Trent [Alexander-Arnold] will go anywhere in January. I saw some ridiculous claims yesterday about Real Madrid planning a bid for him in January.
“I simply don’t believe that’s accurate. It’s absolute nonsense.
“As we’ve mentioned before, every top club in Europe will be watching developments regarding Trent’s future closely, but my information indicates that no decisions have been made yet. Those discussions are ongoing.”
Alexander-Arnold Would Represent Liverpool’s Most Significant Loss.
While other key players face contract expirations, his departure would be the most impactful
At Anfield, Alexander-Arnold is not alone in facing an expiring contract; he is joined by veteran defender Virgil van Dijk and prolific winger Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool supporters are understandably anxious about the prospect of losing any of their star players, let alone three.
Nevertheless, there is a compelling case to be made that Alexander-Arnold would be the most significant loss among them.
Salah, who has established himself as one of the club’s all-time leading scorers since joining in 2017, would certainly be missed for his goal-scoring prowess, but he will be turning 33 at the end of the season.
Similarly, Van Dijk has been recognized as one of the world’s premier defenders for several years. However, he will be 34 at the beginning of the next season, raising concerns about his longevity.
In contrast, Alexander-Arnold will only be 26 at the start of the upcoming season, suggesting he has at least a decade of top-level football ahead of him.
Losing him would not only diminish the team’s future potential but also deprive manager Arne Slot of the unique contributions he could continue to make throughout his career in a Liverpool jersey.
