Arsenal’s decision to sign a ‘world-class’ player this summer is a result of Mikel Arteta’s successful persuasion and influence on the club’s transfer dealings.

Arsenal is said to be willing to deviate from their transfer policy in order to secure the signing of a player that Mikel Arteta is eager to bring in this summer.

The Gunners have made significant strides in the transfer market since the arrival of sporting director Edu Gaspar.

Edu, in collaboration with Mikel Arteta, has constructed a team capable of competing for major titles, and Arsenal may feel unlucky not to have added at least one more Premier League trophy to their collection in the past few seasons.

Much of Arsenal’s success in the market can be attributed to their ability to identify and acquire talented prospects.

Players like Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, and William Saliba have all developed into top-class performers at the club.

Arteta has demonstrated his adaptability in player recruitment, as seen with the successful integration of Jorginho and Leandro Trossard into key roles under his management.

In a departure from their usual transfer strategy, Arsenal are reportedly pursuing Mikel Merino as a priority midfield target for the upcoming season.

Despite their interest in Merino, Arsenal may face disappointment in their pursuit of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, as the player seems likely to remain with his current club.

TEAMtalk reports that Arteta is actively looking for a new midfielder, with Zubimendi indicating he is not interested in leaving Sociedad.

As a result, Arsenal may shift their focus to Mikel Merino. Despite being 28 years old, Merino could be an exception to Arsenal’s usual policy of signing players under 25.

Arteta seems to have persuaded the Arsenal board to make an exception in this case.

Adding Merino to Arsenal’s squad would bring a wealth of experience.

Much like the impact of Jorginho’s arrival, having another seasoned player in the midfield would greatly benefit the current Arsenal team.

Before last season, Arsenal lacked experience, but with signings like Jorginho, Trossard, and Rice, who has significant international and Premier League experience at just 25 years old, Arteta’s team now has more seasoned players to rely on.

Merino is poised to offer a solution and might just be the player Arsenal needs to fill the void left by Granit Xhaka in the midfield trio.

Having excelled at Sociedad, Merino has earned praise as an elite midfielder, with his ball control skills aligning perfectly with Arteta’s tactical approach.

Moreover, Merino has been a key player in Euro 2024, scoring a crucial goal in Spain’s 2-1 victory against Germany in the quarter-finals.
