Michael Owen: ‘Here is my recommendation for Trent Alexander-Arnold if he aspires to join Real Madrid.’

Liverpool icon Michael Owen has expressed his belief that Real Madrid stands out as the only club capable of providing Trent Alexander-Arnold with a “remarkable experience” beyond his time at Anfield.

The Reds’ vice-captain is currently in the final year of his contract, which allows him to engage in discussions with international clubs starting in January.

As it stands, the 25-year-old could potentially leave Liverpool for free when his contract concludes next summer.

With the contracts of captain Virgil van Dijk and star forward Mohamed Salah also set to expire at the end of the current season, it remains uncertain whether agreements will be reached to keep them at the club.

Amid the speculation surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool, various sources, including the Independent, have suggested a possible transfer to Real Madrid.

In light of the increasing conversation about his situation, the player has been reserved, stating earlier this month: “I want to be a Liverpool player this season [at the very least].

I have been with the club for 20 years, and I have signed four or five contract extensions, none of which were made public, and this one will not be either.”

Now, former Liverpool star Owen has acknowledged that he can empathize with the player’s desire for a new challenge should that scenario arise.

In an interview with Liverpool.com, facilitated by AceOdds, the retired forward remarked: “If Trent decides to leave, it won’t be out of disdain for Liverpool.

“When I departed from Liverpool, it wasn’t due to any animosity; it was because I felt it was an opportunity I would regret not pursuing.”

My perspective is clear. I would advise Trent by saying, “If you have no genuine interest in exploring a new dimension of football by playing in a different country or for another team, then you might as well remain at Liverpool for your entire career, as you likely won’t find a better opportunity elsewhere.”

The pundit is well-equipped to offer this perspective, having transitioned from Liverpool to Real Madrid in 2004 after dedicating his entire career to Anfield until that point.

Owen believes that the opportunity to play at the Santiago Bernabéu could be a compelling option for Alexander-Arnold, one that may be difficult to turn down.

He elaborated: “The only other significant experience I envision for Trent is playing for Real Madrid.

This isn’t about team loyalty or support; it’s about whether you desire that life experience or if you’re content to spend your career at Liverpool, which is certainly a valid choice. It would be a wonderful position to be in if that were the case.”

Owen also shared his thoughts on the mindset of elite players like Alexander-Arnold, noting that their decisions are influenced by various factors.

He remarked: “I’m not sure if the grass is always greener. Fans often feel a sense of ownership over certain players.

“However, as individuals navigating life, some may seek different experiences, especially given the brevity of a football career.

Not everyone moves on because they believe it will be better elsewhere; sometimes, it’s simply about seeking a new life experience.”

The former Anfield star concluded: “I understand that some individuals may choose to stay in the same place their entire lives, while others may prefer to relocate to a different area or country. It’s all part of the life experience.”
