Arne Slot is anticipated to include Darwin Nunez in Liverpool’s starting lineup for their Champions League match against Bologna, while facing challenging decisions in other positions.

The Reds will host Bologna at Anfield on Wednesday night for their second fixture in the Champions League group stage, following a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Wolves just four days prior.

With an early match against Crystal Palace scheduled for the weekend, adjustments to the lineup may be necessary.

Here are the potential lineup options for Liverpool against Bologna.

During Tuesday’s training session at the AXA Training Centre, the following updates were noted:

Nunez returns after missing the Wolves match due to illness.

Andy Robertson is fit after sustaining an ankle knock in the previous game.

Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota are unavailable, with Jota having received a positive scan result on his foot.

Harvey Elliott remains sidelined with a fractured foot.

Goalkeepers: Alisson, Kelleher, Jaros, Davies

Defenders: Van Dijk, Konate, Quansah, Gomez, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Bradley, Tsimikas

Midfielders: Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai, Jones, Endo, Morton

Forwards: Salah, Diaz, Gakpo, Nunez

While Slot has effectively utilized rotation in recent matches, it is likely that he will limit changes to his preferred starting XI for the Champions League encounter.

However, with Jota not expected to start despite positive news from his scan earlier in the week, at least one change is anticipated.

This change is expected to involve Nunez joining the attacking line, with Cody Gakpo also a potential starter, leading to the following configuration:

The regular back five will remain intact with Robertson cleared to play.

The first-choice midfield is set to start again.

Nunez and Gakpo will be introduced in the forward positions.

These adjustments would result in Liverpool lining up as follows:

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Gakpo, Nunez.

There remains a possibility that Slot may further adjust his lineup, which could include resting Robertson and making a difficult choice regarding Dominik Szoboszlai.

Given that Szoboszlai struggled in the No. 10 position against Wolves, this might present another opportunity for Curtis Jones to take the starting role.

If Robertson is rested, Kostas Tsimikas would be a natural selection for the left-back position, while Luis Diaz could be kept in the lineup to ensure greater consistency in the attacking front.

This would result in:

Tsimikas joining a largely unchanged defensive setup.

Jones partnering in midfield with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister.

Diaz and Mo Salah remaining in the attack, with Nunez leading the front line.
