Liverpool is reportedly on the verge of finalizing a deal with Ruben Amorim to become their next manager, with an agreement expected to be reached in the coming days.

The club is confident in securing the Portuguese coach as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, signaling a potential end to the search for the new head coach.

As Klopp’s tenure at Anfield nears its end, Liverpool is eager to transition smoothly to the next chapter under Amorim’s leadership, with hopes of achieving a successful season finale under the current manager’s guidance.

Since Klopp announced his departure in January, the search for his replacement has primarily focused on Xabi Alonso, who has impressed in his first managerial role with Bayer Leverkusen.

However, TEAMtalk revealed in February that Alonso would decline the opportunity to manage Liverpool, as he believed it was too early in his career. The 42-year-old himself confirmed this last week, stating that he has no intention of leaving his position at the Bundesliga champions-elect.

During this time, it was also revealed that Liverpool were actively pursuing another candidate for the job in Ruben Amorim, who is aiming to win the domestic championship with Sporting Lisbon this season.

Leading the search for the next Liverpool manager is Michael Edwards, the club’s recently-appointed CEO of football. Edwards, who played a significant role in Liverpool’s success under Klopp, is a strong admirer of the 39-year-old Amorim and sees him as the ideal successor to Klopp at Anfield.

Edwards has been instrumental in securing key signings such as Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino, who formed Liverpool’s formidable front three and played a crucial role in the team’s recent achievements.

In addition, he successfully negotiated the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for a staggering £142m, using the funds to secure the signings of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, two pivotal additions to the Liverpool squad. These deals proved to be game-changers for Klopp at the time and continue to have a significant impact to this day.

Now, the owners of Liverpool, FSG, are placing their hopes on Edwards to make another crucial decision by appointing Amorim as Klopp’s successor.

Amorim has an impressive track record, boasting a remarkable 69.71% win percentage with Sporting. After leading them to the Primeira Liga title in 2021, he appears well-positioned to achieve a repeat success this season.

Furthermore, Amorim’s former midfielder, Joao Palhinha, has already expressed his admiration for the coach, hinting at a potential reunion at Anfield.

According to Portuguese football expert Pedro Sepulveda, Edwards is “confident” that a deal for Amorim can be reached soon. The 39-year-old coach himself is reportedly “open” to the idea of moving to Merseyside once the current season concludes.

Sepulveda asserts that negotiations between the two parties have yet to commence, but they are expected to start next week. An agreement with Amorim’s team is anticipated to be reached in the coming days.

The terms of the deal, including personal terms and its duration, which is believed to be initially for three years with the possibility of extending to a fourth year, are not expected to pose any issues.

Amorim has dropped a significant hint about his interest in becoming the manager of Liverpool. However, Sporting has a crucial series of fixtures ahead that will determine their chances of winning the title. This includes a highly anticipated match against Benfica on Saturday evening, where the top two teams will face off.

Due to this, Sepulveda suggests that Sporting hopes Liverpool will delay their approach for as long as possible, allowing them to maintain focus on their current objectives.

Nevertheless, Amorim himself has expressed his interest in the vacant position, making it extremely challenging for Sporting to retain his services.

During discussions about his future on Friday, Amorim made it clear that he cannot follow in the footsteps of Xabi Alonso and commit his future to his current club.

I cannot provide a definite answer regarding my stay at Sporting for the upcoming season,” he mentioned.

“I am unable to make a statement like Xabi Alonso did.

“We still have time to deliberate on my future, and we will address it at the appropriate moment. For now, the focus is on securing titles, and only after that will we assess the situation.”

When questioned about his potential continuation at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in the following season, Amorim responded, “I cannot assure that. Sporting is planning for the future, and I am bound by my word. If we fail to secure titles, I will have to leave the club.

“This has been crystal clear from the start, and I made sure to communicate this to my players because our primary goal is to win. Once we achieve that, we can then contemplate the future.”

Amorim’s exit clause at Sporting stands at €15m (£12.9m), and his contract with the club in the capital is valid until the summer of 2026.
