Liverpool finds hope in Anthony Gordon after establishing a new relationship, despite the £88.5m transfer lesson.

The Newcastle United winger has been rumored to be close with one member of the Liverpool squad, providing a glimmer of hope for the Reds.

Liverpool fans may have been left wondering what could have been as they watched Jude Bellingham celebrate with the European Cup at Wembley.

The talented England international had an outstanding debut season with Real Madrid, culminating in a Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Bellingham also played a crucial role in securing the La Liga title, scoring 23 goals in 42 appearances and providing 13 assists, including the decisive one for Vinicius Jr’s winning goal.

Despite being just shy of turning 21, Bellingham’s £88.5m transfer fee has proven to be a worthwhile investment for Real Madrid.

Looking back, it seems inevitable that he would choose to join the Bernabeu, as he had made it clear that they were the only club he wanted to play for once he became aware of their interest.

However, when June 2023 arrived, Liverpool had already lost interest in their long-standing target. They had actually withdrawn from the competition in April, as they had accepted the fact that they would not qualify for the Champions League and would not be able to afford the move for the Borussia Dortmund star at that time.

Additionally, Liverpool needed more than just one high-profile signing to address their midfield issues.

Liverpool had been closely monitoring Bellingham since his schoolboy days and had been strongly linked with him for over a year before deciding to step back from pursuing his signature.

Despite not signing a new midfielder in the summer of 2022, Liverpool seemed willing to wait for 12 months to secure their top target. However, circumstances changed along the way.

As a result, we will never know if Liverpool would have been successful in beating Real Madrid in the race for the midfielder’s signature, had their 2022/23 campaign gone according to plan.

Prior to Liverpool publicly withdrawing their interest, Kopites dared to dream for a brief period. Bellingham’s impressive performances on the international stage added fuel to the speculation. With well-documented friendships with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson, supporters playfully referred to them as ‘Agent Trent’ and ‘Agent Hendo’, hoping that they would help bring the midfielder to Anfield.

Unfortunately, all the public flirting amounted to nothing when it came time for Bellingham to make a decision. This served as an unwanted lesson for the Reds fanbase.

Perhaps this is why supporters are not allowing themselves to get carried away again, as Liverpool is once again linked with a move for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon.

Despite having played for Everton in the past, the 23-year-old footballer began his youth career with Liverpool, being a lifelong fan of the club and idolizing Steven Gerrard.

Recently, he expressed his admiration for the incredible atmosphere at Anfield, considering it the best away atmosphere he has experienced.

It is evident that the England international is not concerned about further damaging his already strained relationship with Everton.

Gordon has also developed a close bond with a player from Liverpool, as they were both named in England’s provisional squad for Euro 2024. Curtis Jones, who received his first call-up for the camp, has always been accompanied by Gordon, the Newcastle United player.

Last week, the Liverpool midfielder shared a photo on his Instagram story, showing the two of them embracing, and referred to Gordon as his brother, using both a fingers crossed and heart emoji.

Agent Jones is currently working on the case, attempting to entice Gordon to join Anfield. Recent comments suggest that Gordon may not require much persuasion. However, despite the cryptic hint, it is uncertain whether this will actually happen.

It is widely known that Jones and Gordon share a close friendship. They both played prominent roles for England Under-21s during their victorious European Championships campaign last summer. Additionally, they trained together in Los Angeles before the 2022/23 season, despite their previous rivalry as players representing Merseyside clubs.

While it may be tempting to interpret Jones’ fingers crossed emoji as a sign of his willingness to welcome Gordon to Anfield, Liverpool has learned from their experience with the Bellingham transfer saga that assumptions can be misleading. Not every transfer story ends happily, and sometimes, two plus two does not equal four.
