Liverpool’s Boxing Day Predicted XI vs Leicester: Defender Dropped Despite ‘Outstanding’ Performance at Spurs
Liverpool’s expected team for the Boxing Day match against Leicester features a notable absence of a defender, despite his commendable showing in the recent game against Spurs.
In the lead-up to the Boxing Day fixture against Leicester, Liverpool’s projected starting lineup excludes a defender who showcased an outstanding display against Spurs.
As fans worldwide celebrate the Christmas season, Liverpool’s players are preparing for another significant match.
The Reds returned to winning form in the Premier League on Sunday, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 and establishing a four-point lead at the top of the standings.
With their title competitors playing on Thursday and Friday, Liverpool has another opportunity to make a statement as they face Leicester City at Anfield.
Historically, Liverpool has performed well in Boxing Day matches, and with Leicester struggling under Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Reds should feel optimistic. Here’s the expected lineup that Arne Slot may deploy.
Defense
One area of concern from Liverpool’s performance against Spurs was their defensive vulnerability.
Consequently, and considering the quick turnaround with another match on Sunday, we anticipate Slot will make adjustments to the back five for the encounter with Leicester.
Alisson Becker will remain a key figure as he seeks his first Premier League clean sheet since returning from injury.
Virgil van Dijk aims to support him in achieving that goal, and Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to keep his position as well. However, we foresee two changes in the defense with an eye on Sunday’s away match against West Ham.
Joe Gomez delivered an ‘outstanding’ performance against Tottenham but has played the last six matches. Therefore, Slot may opt to give Jarell Quansah a chance while awaiting Ibrahima Konate’s return.
At left-back, a fit-again Kostas Tsimikas should help alleviate some pressure on Andy Robertson.
Midfield
Slot will likely be cautious about implementing too many changes against Leicester, but rotation will be essential given the challenging away fixture ahead.
After an exhausting performance against Spurs, we believe Dominik Szoboszlai should start on the bench, with Curtis Jones stepping in to take his place.
Slot must exercise caution with Ryan Gravenberch, as he will be sidelined for the West Ham match if he receives a yellow card in this game. Nevertheless, Gravenberch remains a player worthy of trust.
As always, Alexis Mac Allister, who recently celebrated his 26th birthday on Tuesday, is expected to round out the midfield trio.
In the attack, Luis Diaz has demonstrated his capability as Liverpool’s primary centre-forward with an impressive performance against Tottenham. However, it is anticipated that Diaz will revert to his more familiar left-wing position for the match against Leicester, allowing Diogo Jota to replace Cody Gakpo.
While Darwin Nunez is also an option, it seems appropriate to give Jota his first start since October 20th. Federico Chiesa is expected to return to the squad, but with Mohamed Salah in exceptional form, there is no justification for sidelining the Egyptian King in this match.
