Preview: Liverpool vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers – match prediction, team updates, and starting lineups

Liverpool’s Starting XI against Wolves: Preview, team updates, predicted lineups. An emotional atmosphere is expected at Anfield as the club’s legendary manager says goodbye.

The upcoming match between Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers is set to be an emotional one at Anfield, as Jurgen Klopp, one of the club’s most revered managers, bids farewell. This will be Klopp’s last game as Liverpool manager, and it is expected to be a poignant moment as he addresses the passionate Kop and listens to the iconic anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” within the walls of Anfield.

Although there is nothing significant at stake for either club in this match, all eyes will be on Klopp as he spends his final 90 minutes in a Liverpool tracksuit.

It is safe to say that Klopp may not miss the English media too much, but during his pre-match press conference on Friday, he was presented with a beautiful canvas showcasing some of his cherished memories from his time in Merseyside, including Champions League success and the long-awaited Premier League triumph.

After announcing his resignation four months ago, shocking the football world, Klopp’s farewell is now imminent.

Alongside him, his coaching team consisting of Pep Lijnders, Vitor Matos, and Peter Krawietz will also bid their farewells, with Lijnders and Matos continuing their journey together at Red Bull Salzburg.

Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, will not be taking it easy on Sunday despite having nothing to play for in terms of league position. The team has already secured third place in the Premier League table after a disappointing Easter period dashed their hopes of winning the title.

In their last match against Aston Villa on Monday, Liverpool experienced a rollercoaster of emotions. Despite being in the lead with a score of 3-1, they were unable to hold on as Jhon Duran scored two late goals, resulting in a 3-3 draw at Villa Park. It was a fitting end to Klopp’s final season, as the team’s ability to bounce back from setbacks seemed to have deserted them.

This recent slump in form has seen Liverpool win only three out of their last nine matches across all competitions. Additionally, they have not kept a clean sheet in the Premier League at Anfield since December 17.

Ending this defensive drought would be a small consolation for Klopp as he bids farewell to the club he holds dear.

In his early days as a manager in English football, Wolves boss Gary O’Neil is determined to spoil the party for his opponents on Sunday, even though they still have a chance to finish in the top half of the standings if results go their way.

Unfortunately, Wolves have lost their edge at this late stage of the season. After suffering a heavy defeat against Manchester City on May 4, O’Neil’s team was easily defeated by Oliver Glasner’s in-form Crystal Palace side in the previous weekend.

The trio of Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Eberechi Eze outshined Matheus Cunha’s goal at Molineux, leaving Wolves in a rather ordinary 13th place in the standings. However, they are only two points behind Brighton & Hove Albion, who currently sit in 10th position.

To secure a place in the top half of the table, the Old Gold team would need to spoil Klopp’s celebration, which seems unlikely considering their recent poor performance with only one win in their last 10 matches across all competitions.

Additionally, they would have to hope for slip-ups from Brighton, Bournemouth, and Crystal Palace. However, O’Neil and his team are not overly concerned about their failure to climb out of the bottom 10. In their September encounter at Molineux, Liverpool showcased their trademark comeback abilities with a 3-1 victory over Wolves.

It is worth noting that Wolves have not won a Premier League game at Anfield since 2010, so they are not expected to pose a significant threat to Klopp’s farewell. In addition to Klopp and his coaching team’s imminent departures, Liverpool announced on Friday morning that Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip will be leaving when their contracts expire at the end of the season.

Unfortunately, Matip’s ACL injury will prevent him from bidding farewell on the field.

Thiago returned to training earlier this week after a muscle issue and has a small chance of playing in the final match. Diogo Jota and Andy Robertson have also rejoined the team and are expected to be involved. However, Ben Doak and Bobby Clark will have to watch from the sidelines. Klopp may consider giving minutes to Conor Bradley and Stefan Bajcetic, most likely as substitutes.

On the other hand, Pedro Neto, the skillful Portuguese winger for Wolves, is in the final stages of his recovery from a thigh injury and will be included in the squad for the trip to Merseyside, as confirmed by O’Neil.

Unfortunately, Craig Dawson and Leon Chiwone will both be absent for the visitors due to a groin and ankle injury respectively. However, Jose Sa, who was previously unavailable due to illness, has now fully recovered and will be back in the ranks.

However, there is a slight concern regarding Pablo Sarabia’s fitness, which has raised doubts about his availability for O’Neil’s team. Additionally, Boubacar Traore was withdrawn during the previous weekend’s match, although it seemed to be a tactical decision by O’Neil.

The early substitution of Traore opens up opportunities for Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Tommy Doyle to potentially return to the midfield alongside Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes. Interestingly, Liverpool seems to be considering reigniting their interest in Lemina and Gomes this summer.

Here are the possible starting lineups for both teams:

Liverpool:

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Robertson; Elliott, Endo, Mac Allister; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz

Wolverhampton Wanderers:

Sa; S. Bueno, Toti, Kilman; Semedo, Doyle, Lemina, Gomes, Ait-Nouri; Cunha, Hwang.
