Liverpool player ratings, winners and losers vs West Ham as Reds advance to Carabao Cup fourth round…
Assessing Liverpool’s players: Key performers and underachievers in the match against West Ham as the Reds secure a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Arne Slot implemented nine changes for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third round match against West Ham at Anfield, a decision that proved successful as Liverpool triumphed with a 5-1 scoreline.
The Reds secured their place in the next round of the Carabao Cup, thanks to two goals each from Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo, leading to a decisive victory over West Ham.
Liverpool initially fell behind due to a defensive error that saw Jarell Quansah score an own goal. However, Jota netted twice before halftime, followed by goals from Mohamed Salah and two from Gakpo to seal the win.
Arne Slot’s lineup featured nine changes, with several players making their first starts of the season, leaving only Caoimhin Kelleher and Darwin Nunez from the team that faced Bournemouth on Saturday.
The starting XI included Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas, Wataru Endo, and Curtis Jones alongside Gakpo, Jota, and Quansah, while summer signing Federico Chiesa made his first start for Liverpool, playing 60 minutes before being substituted for Salah.
Winners
Diogo Jota emerged as the standout performer of the evening, responding impressively to his recent omission from the starting lineup with a brace.
His substitution around the 60-minute mark hints at a potential start against his former club, Wolves, on Saturday.
Federico Chiesa also deserves recognition for his debut start with Liverpool following his transfer from Juventus.
After coming off the bench in the previous two matches against AC Milan and Bournemouth, he made a significant impact during his 60 minutes on the pitch, including providing the assist for the opening goal.
Gakpo was the standout performer in the match against AC Milan last week.
Although he returned to the bench for the Bournemouth game, he once again demonstrated his talent in the match against West Ham, where he was energetic throughout and scored two goals in the second half.
Losers
Quansah’s season has started poorly. After being substituted at halftime during the opening match against Ipswich Town and not featuring since, he unfortunately scored an own goal upon his return in the first half against West Ham.
However, he managed to integrate into the game more effectively afterward.
Japanese midfielder Endo was given a significant chance to prove himself for a spot in Slot’s starting lineup but did not make a strong impression against West Ham.
He contributed to Quansah’s own goal by inadvertently passing the ball into him and had several instances of losing possession.
Jones also struggled in the first half. While he did provide an assist for Liverpool’s second goal, he was unable to capitalize on his opportunity to shine.
