Liverpool must now make a decision regarding Joe Gomez’s departure after sealing a £45m deal for Anthony Gordon…
Liverpool is now tasked with deciding whether to let go of Joe Gomez after sealing a £45m agreement for Anthony Gordon.
Joe Gomez is confronted with a decision regarding his future at Liverpool following the confirmation of a £45 million deal included in the Anthony Gordon transfer package.
Joe Gomez is confronted with a pivotal choice regarding his future at Liverpool following the confirmation of a £45 million deal linked to Anthony Gordon’s transfer.
The defender was on the verge of a £45 million transfer to Newcastle United, but the deal has since fallen through, leading to increased interest in the England international.
Liverpool had reached a preliminary agreement for Gomez as part of a larger transaction that would have seen Anthony Gordon move to Anfield for £75 million.
Nevertheless, Newcastle ultimately abandoned the transfer as they explored alternative options to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules before the June 30 deadline.
Gomez is currently enjoying a holiday following his participation in England’s squad for the European Championships.
He is reportedly well-informed about the ongoing situation and is expected to return to the AXA Training Centre next week to commence pre-season training under the guidance of new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot.
While Newcastle has not pursued the centre-back further, Gomez has garnered considerable interest from several other clubs, although Liverpool has not yet received any formal offers.
Liverpool continues to show a keen interest in Newcastle winger Gordon, especially as Mohamed Salah enters the final year of his contract and uncertainties surround Luis Diaz’s long-term future.
However, the urgency for Newcastle to sell the player has diminished, likely resulting in an increase in his asking price.
Having joined Liverpool nine years ago, Gomez is the club’s longest-serving player and was one of the most reliable performers last season, despite starting only four matches in his favored centre-back role.
Joel Matip left the club on a free transfer at the conclusion of last season, and Liverpool is anticipated to part ways with several other centre-backs in the coming month.
Sepp van den Berg has attracted interest from PSV Eindhoven, Mainz, and Wolfsburg, with Liverpool setting a £20m valuation on the Dutch defender. Additionally, Nat Phillips is available for a fee of £8m.
Academy products Rhys Williams and Billy Koumetio, who are not part of the current US tour, are also expected to depart.
Liverpool’s choice not to pursue their initial interest in Leny Yoro is not thought to be connected to the failed Gomez transfer, which is considered outside their planned scope for this summer.
Manchester United was the sole club to meet Lille’s £52m asking price for the young talent.
