Liverpool is making a final push to secure the signing of a defensive midfielder, valued at £624,000 per year, as they remain committed to strengthening their squad.

Despite having Wataru Endo and the rising talent of Ryan Gravenberch, the need for a dedicated defensive midfielder is clear.

The club’s interest in Martin Zubimendi this summer was well publicized, but that transfer did not materialize as anticipated.

In the opening two matches of the Premier League season, manager Arne Slot has opted to deploy Gravenberch in a defensive role alongside Alexis Mac Allister, who is allowed more freedom to advance and orchestrate play in attacking areas.

Nevertheless, Liverpool is actively exploring the market for a new addition to this position and appears to have pinpointed a target.

According to reports from Spain, the club is preparing for a last-minute acquisition of Olympiacos midfielder Santiago Hezze and is resolute in finalizing the deal.

The 22-year-old Argentine talent is regarded as one of the most promising players emerging from South America in recent years.

His standout performances during the recent Olympics have demonstrated his readiness for a significant career advancement.

Hezze has been with Olympiacos since the start of the previous season.

Primarily a traditional defensive midfielder, he also possesses the versatility to play in more advanced roles, making him a suitable fit for Slot’s double #6 system.

With a solid presence on the ball and strong defensive awareness, Hezze embodies the qualities expected of a high-caliber defensive midfielder.

While he is still developing, it is important to recognize that at just 22, he is not yet a finished product, especially in a position where players typically reach their peak in their 20s.

Securing Hezze at this stage would provide Arne Slot the opportunity to develop him into the player he envisions.

The midfielder, earning £624,000 annually, is contracted with Olympiacos for an additional four years; however, Liverpool should be able to finalize the deal with an appropriate offer.

If Liverpool acts swiftly, Hezze could prove to be a valuable addition. With Gravenberch and Endo already in the squad, Slot can gradually integrate the young talent.

This signing is more about future potential, and it remains to be seen if the deal can be completed.
