Liverpool is deeply upset after Lucas Bergvall from Spurs dodged a second yellow card for his foul on Kostas Tsimikas, just prior to scoring and leading Ange Postecoglou’s team to triumph.
Liverpool expressed their outrage after Spurs player Lucas Bergvall avoided a second yellow card for a tackle on Kostas Tsimikas, just before scoring the decisive goal that led Ange Postecoglou’s team to victory.
Bergvall’s controversial goal gave Tottenham a 1-0 lead in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.
The match, held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday, was tightly contested and seemed destined to end in a stalemate after Dominic Solanke had a goal disallowed for offside in the second half.
However, in the 86th minute, Bergvall capitalized on a brilliant play by Solanke to score his first goal for Spurs.
Ange Postecoglou’s team managed to secure the win ahead of the return leg at Anfield next month, but the circumstances surrounding Bergvall’s goal were contentious.
Liverpool was left seething, as the Swedish midfielder appeared fortunate to remain on the field.
He had already received a yellow card in the first half for a sliding tackle on Luis Diaz, which replays indicated involved minimal contact.
He then followed up with another sliding challenge that took out Tsimikas.
This incident ignited fury among Liverpool players and supporters, underscoring the intense emotions that often accompany crucial cup matches.
As both teams gear up for the second leg, attention will be on whether Bergvall can keep his composure and if Liverpool can turn the tie around.
Liverpool were incensed after Lucas Bergvall avoided a second yellow card for his foul on Tsimikas.
The Swedish player had already been cautioned in the first half for a challenge on Luis Diaz by referee Stuart Attwell.
Moments after his unpunished foul on Tsimikas, Bergvall scored the winning goal for Spurs.
To make matters worse, Tsimikas was off the field waiting to re-enter, leaving Liverpool temporarily with ten men when the goal was scored.
The Liverpool bench expressed their frustration, with a coaching staff member receiving a yellow card from Attwell for his objections, while Arne Slot was observed arguing with the fourth official.
In his post-match comments, Slot firmly stated that the officials had erred significantly.
“On Sunday, a decision went against Spurs; today, it favored them,” he remarked.
“It’s unfortunate for us. There’s no debate that it should have been a second yellow for Bergvall.”
Reds captain Virgil van Dijk also directed his frustration at the officials, asserting that they need to improve their performance.
“It was quite evident that it should have been a second yellow for Lucas Bergvall,” he stated.
“It was clear. It was a coincidence that he scored the winner just a minute later.
“It is what it is. In my opinion, the referee made a mistake, and I conveyed that to him. He believes he didn’t, but it was obvious, and everyone on the sidelines recognized it should have been a yellow card.
“With a linesman, a fourth official, VAR, and the referee present, how does he not receive a second yellow? I’m not claiming this was the reason for our loss tonight, but it was a significant moment in the match.”
In the Sky Sports studio, Michael Dawson and Jamie Redknapp concurred with Slot, insisting that Spurs had benefited from a fortunate decision.
“Stuart Atwell placed himself in a difficult position; I don’t believe the first foul on Luis Diaz warranted a yellow card,” remarked former Tottenham defender Dawson.
“What I can say about Bergvall is that he gave Stuart Attwell a chance to make a decision. Attwell got the first one wrong; it wasn’t a yellow card.
“For the second incident, I can’t defend Bergvall; he lunges and makes contact with Tsimikas. If he gets one decision right and another wrong, you can’t balance it out.
“Liverpool ended up being penalized as moments later, the ball found the back of the net.”
Liverpool faced consequences shortly thereafter, as the ball found the back of the net moments later.
“I can empathize with Liverpool’s frustration. Once the first yellow card is issued, there is an expectation for a second yellow card without any doubt,” Redknapp remarked.
He continued, “If you were in Liverpool’s position, you would be extremely upset. It significantly impacts the remainder of the match.”
“Tsimikas had to leave the field for treatment, leaving Liverpool with only ten players.
“He was off for 30 seconds, which meant that not only was Bergvall on the pitch, but they also had to adjust to playing with a man down, altering the team’s formation.”
“From Spurs’ perspective, it was an excellent play, but for Liverpool’s coaches, players, and fans, the question arises as to why he was still on the field while our left back was not.”
