Liverpool have six excellent alternative options for their next manager, so forget about Ruben Amorim.

Liverpool have a number of top-class alternatives to Ruben Amorim as they search for a new manager to replace Jurgen Klopp.

Initially, Xabi Alonso was a strong contender, but he decided to extend his contract with Bayer Leverkusen. As a result, Amorim became the frontrunner for the position.

However, recent reports from Portugal and the UK indicate that it is unlikely he will take the job. This has left Liverpool in a difficult position, as they now need to explore other options. The search for Klopp’s successor has hit a roadblock, but there are still several highly qualified candidates available.

While Amorim may still be a possibility, his recent trip to London suggests he may be considering a position at West Ham United instead of Liverpool. Additionally, Portuguese newspaper Record suggests that he may not be particularly interested in either opportunity. Liverpool will need to regroup and consider their other options carefully.

Liverpool now faces the question of who will be their next manager. We have examined six potential candidates who could potentially step into Klopp’s role next summer and evaluated their suitability for the position:

Paulo Fonseca

According to various media sources, Liverpool has already initiated talks with Portuguese manager Fonseca. Fonseca’s candidacy comes as a surprise, as he is currently managing Lille, a French team that holds the fourth position in Ligue 1. Despite their recent elimination from the Europa Conference League after a valiant effort against Aston Villa, Fonseca’s discussions with Liverpool have sparked interest.

At the age of 51, Fonseca is one of the more seasoned managers that Liverpool may consider. However, his career took some time to gain momentum. From 2007 to 2016, he managed seven different teams in his home country, including Porto and Braga.

During this period, he had brief stints at each club and was unable to complete a full season at Porto, which was his most significant role at the time. Nevertheless, Fonseca’s reputation has grown over time, particularly due to his successful tenure at Shakhtar Donetsk.

He achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Ukrainian Premier League and cup double in all three seasons he spent there. Following his time at Shakhtar Donetsk, Fonseca had two respectable years at AS Roma.

Arne Slot

Arne Slot, a 45-year-old Dutchman, currently manages Feyenoord. Under his guidance, Feyenoord clinched the Eredivisie title last season, marking their second title in the century. Although they are trailing behind PSV Eindhoven this season, Slot’s team secured the KNVB Cup, solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s most talented and exciting managers.

According to reports from GiveMeSport and other sources, Slot is being considered for a position at Liverpool. His tactical approach aligns well with Liverpool’s style of play. Similar to Fonseca, Slot predominantly employs a 4-2-3-1 system. However, he also incorporates a high press, reminiscent of Klopp’s tactics, and utilizes attacking wing-backs who push forward with the ball. While there is a slight difference in midfield structure between Slot’s Feyenoord and Klopp’s staggered central three, it wouldn’t require a significant adjustment for the players.

Interestingly, The Daily Express has suggested that Liverpool’s rumored interest in Amorim may have been a diversion to conceal their pursuit of Slot.

Roberto de Zerbi, the head coach of Brighton & Hove Albion, emerged as one of the early contenders in the rumor mill when Jurgen Klopp announced his departure as Liverpool manager. Alongside Alonso, de Zerbi’s name has been consistently linked to the vacant managerial position at Liverpool. Despite the ongoing search for a new manager, it seems unlikely that the speculation surrounding de Zerbi will dissipate.

De Zerbi has gained recognition for his adventurous tactical approach at Brighton, which revolves around an attacking style of play and a strategy to draw pressing teams deep before hitting them on the counter. This has made him a favorite among strategy enthusiasts. However, the mixed results this season have somewhat tarnished his candidacy for top European jobs. There are valid concerns about his defensive coaching abilities, given the number of goals Brighton has conceded.

Furthermore, de Zerbi’s intricate style of play relies on a back three formation, which would require additional investments in the transfer market. This may not align with the preferences of Liverpool’s owners. These factors serve as red flags, but de Zerbi’s imaginative tactics and his previous successful stints at Shakhtar Donetsk and Sassuolo have earned him some admirers within the boardrooms of Anfield.

Thiago Motta, the former Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Milan midfielder, has proven to be an exceptional manager just as he was a player.

Since taking charge of Bologna in 2022, he has revitalized the club and positioned them in the top four of Serie A, with a strong possibility of qualifying for the Champions League. This achievement would be monumental.

Despite being a defensive midfielder, Motta’s approach to football is remarkably attack-minded. He once stated, “for me, the attacker is the first defender and the goalkeeper is the first attacker.”

At Bologna, he utilizes two deep-lying attacking players, Joshua Zirkzee and Lewis Ferguson, who excel in finding spaces between the lines and can operate as number tens or wingers when needed. This versatility and creative thinking in attack have led to speculations linking him to managerial positions at Liverpool, Juventus, or AC Milan, although many Italian pundits believe the latter options are more likely.

Gary O’Neil has performed admirably at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and previously at Bournemouth, where he managed to avoid relegation before being let go. His impressive work has already sparked rumors of him potentially taking over at Manchester United, and his name has appeared on bookmakers’ odds tables as the next Liverpool manager, despite limited press links.

O’Neil has instilled resilience in Wolves and resolved their goal-scoring issues this season, propelling a team that many pundits predicted would struggle to a comfortable mid-table position. Although his managerial career is relatively short, it may not yet provide enough evidence to convince Liverpool.

However, given his current trajectory, it is likely that a traditional big club will eventually take a chance on him. Nonetheless, the lack of proven success at a top-tier team may hinder his prospects for now.

According to TeamTalk, there are reports suggesting that Brentford manager Thomas Frank is being considered as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

While these rumors have not been confirmed by other sources, Frank’s impressive track record at Brentford makes him a strong contender for the position. Despite not having won any major trophies, his successful tenure at the London club demonstrates his ability to handle a bigger role.

Liverpool may be hesitant to take a chance on Frank due to the lack of silverware on his resume, but his aggressive and pressing style of play aligns with the club’s philosophy. Additionally, he is highly regarded for his skills in man-management.
