Liverpool has made an offer to acquire a “world-class” player who has the potential to become their top defensive midfielder since Fabinho.
Liverpool has made a significant move to secure a “world-class” midfielder who could potentially be their best defensive midfielder since Fabinho, according to recent opinions.
In their recent match against Manchester United, Liverpool displayed a lackluster performance, but the key takeaway is that Arne Slot’s team managed to avoid a loss.
The team has shown signs of vulnerability in recent seasons, but Slot’s robust tactical approach has positioned Liverpool favorably in the Premier League.
While the Dutch manager is benefiting from Jurgen Klopp’s midfield overhaul, he has yet to make his mark in the transfer market and is preparing to bring in competition for Ryan Gravenberch in the defensive midfield position.
Liverpool’s pursuit of a new midfielder
Reports from Spain indicate that Liverpool has submitted an ambitious €50 million (£43 million) offer for Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, who has fallen out of favor with Carlo Ancelotti.
At just 24 years old, Tchouameni remains one of Europe’s most gifted defensive midfielders and has garnered interest from several clubs, including Manchester City, who are eager to outbid their Premier League rivals.
With Gravenberch starting every league and Champions League match this season, adding a strong competitor could be beneficial, as Tchouameni has the potential to become Liverpool’s top defensive midfielder since Fabinho.
Why Tchouameni could be the ideal fit
Journalist Stefan Bienkowski has praised Tchouameni for his “world-class” midfield skills, highlighting his exceptional ball-winning capabilities, which could make him the ideal addition to Slot’s midfield, potentially creating a new version of Fabinho for the team.
While Tchouameni may not possess the same level of mobility and athleticism as Gravenberch, he excels in maintaining composure and demonstrates a keen understanding of the game, effectively reading situations and responding proactively to emerging threats.
The former Brazilian player excelled in this area, prompting Klopp to recognize him as “one of the best in the world” in the number six position, commending both his defensive capabilities and his ability to play the ball effectively.
Tchouameni could certainly form a productive partnership with Gravenberch on the pitch. While they operate in similar areas, they bring different strengths to the role; Tchouameni is known for his aggressive ball-winning, whereas Gravenberch is characterized by his elegant and press-resistant style.
It is evident that Gravenberch and Tchouameni have distinct qualities, particularly highlighted by Gravenberch’s relentless energy and his drive towards the attacking zones.
Fabinho’s decline mirrored Liverpool’s struggles under Klopp during the 2022/23 season, which led FSG to pursue several new signings, including Gravenberch.
However, the Brazilian’s tenacious presence in midfield is still somewhat missed today.
He can be viewed as a more technically refined version of Wataru Endo, combining combativeness with sophistication.
Liverpool should aggressively pursue the French midfielder this winter, as his skill set could provide the necessary boost to help the team fend off title rivals like Arsenal and achieve a historic Premier League title under their new manager.
