‘It feels like’: Gary Neville says Liverpool’s performance this season is something he hasn’t seen in ages…
Gary Neville observes that Liverpool is exhibiting a level of performance he hasn’t witnessed in a long time this season.
According to Gary Neville, Liverpool is demonstrating a style of play this season that he hasn’t observed for many years.
As the second international break of the season approaches, Liverpool finds itself comfortably at the top of the Premier League standings.
Under the management of Arne Slot, the team has not been flawless, but they have certainly been impressive.
After competing in 10 matches across all competitions, Liverpool has secured nine victories and suffered just one defeat, a remarkable record.
The team’s current success is largely attributed to a solid defensive strategy. Having conceded only two goals in seven Premier League games, Liverpool’s defense has been exceptionally organized.
This defensive strength will face challenges in the coming weeks, as Alisson Becker is expected to be sidelined for seven matches due to injury.
Nevertheless, Gary Neville remarks that Liverpool’s defense is demonstrating a level of consistency he hasn’t seen in quite some time.
Neville, known for his critical stance towards Liverpool, rarely offers them praise, often relishing in their setbacks.
However, as a true football enthusiast, Neville can certainly recognize certain attributes when they are evident.
During his appearance on The Overlap on Thursday, the pundit commended the durability of Liverpool’s defensive lineup.
With the Reds performing exceptionally well defensively this season, Neville acknowledged the extended period that Alisson, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, and Virgil van Dijk have played together.
“That back five has likely been on the pitch together more than any other defensive unit for quite some time,” Neville remarked.
“You have Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Konate, and Van Dijk.
“While some might argue that Konate hasn’t featured in every match, it certainly feels like that back five, including Alisson, is quite robust.”
Is Liverpool’s defense facing significant changes?
Neville is correct; the Liverpool defense has been fundamental to the team since the early days of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.
Notably, Alexander-Arnold emerged from the Liverpool academy but truly established himself as a regular right-back during the 2017/18 season.
This coincided with the arrivals of Robertson and Van Dijk, while Alisson joined the following year.
Konate is somewhat of an exception, having signed in 2021. Nevertheless, in his fourth season at Anfield, the French defender is well-acquainted with his defensive partners.
Despite their impressive continuity, Liverpool’s defense may be poised for significant changes this summer. With Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold nearing the end of their contracts and Robertson not far behind, we might be witnessing a ‘last dance’ for the renowned back five of the Reds.
