‘I was selfish’: Martin Zubimendi shares the details reasons behind his choice to reject a move to Liverpool…
Martin Zubimendi reflects on his decision to turn down a transfer to Liverpool, stating, “I was selfish.”
Liverpool fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming January transfer window, which could prove pivotal for the club.
The Reds have some pressing issues to address, having not fully resolved certain squad concerns during the summer transfer period.
One of the main priorities for manager Arne Slot is to secure a central midfielder to enhance the Liverpool lineup.
The club had previously attempted to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad before the season commenced.
Despite initial indications that Zubimendi was open to a move, he ultimately opted to remain with his childhood club.
Now, several months later, Zubimendi has shared insights into his decision regarding Liverpool.
As the January window approaches, speculation suggests that Liverpool may renew their interest in the player.
However, based on Zubimendi’s remarks to Spanish publication El Diario Vasco, it appears he does not harbor significant regrets about his choice.
“I was taken by surprise while on vacation; it was not something I had anticipated,” Zubimendi explained regarding Liverpool’s interest.
“I had to respond to the situation, which was quite uncomfortable for me. After considering the advantages and disadvantages, I determined that staying was the best option.”
He further emphasized, “I don’t subscribe to the notion of ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunities.
If you possess talent and ambition, opportunities will present themselves in due time. There’s no need to rush.”
Zubimendi elaborated on his reasons for declining the move to Liverpool, citing several ‘selfish’ motivations for his decision.
“I considered my personal development, my identity, and the club’s vision,” he stated.
“I chose to stay because I recognized the significance of this season for my role in the team, and I still have goals to achieve. The decision was not particularly difficult.”
There were numerous factors influencing my choice, yet I prioritized my own interests, ultimately deciding that remaining was the best option for me.
Zubimendi shuts the door on Liverpool
Zubimendi may be attempting to reassure Real Sociedad supporters of his dedication to the club, but the firmness of his statements could effectively close the door on a potential move to Liverpool.
The Reds continue to hold Zubimendi in high regard, but he appears to have no interest in pursuing that opportunity.
From Real Sociedad’s perspective, this is undoubtedly positive news, while Liverpool should consider moving on.
The opportunity to join Liverpool is a rare one, and many have regretted passing it up in the past, as evidenced by Mario Gotze’s experience.
Zubimendi is enjoying another strong season, and while a transfer may be possible in the future, Liverpool should not pursue him again.
