‘He is brilliant’: Owen Hargreaves commends the Liverpool midfielder’s performance against Wolves, comparing him to Rodri and acknowledging his exceptional talent…
Owen Hargreaves draws a comparison to Rodri following the impressive performance of Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch against Wolves, where Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory.
After the Liverpool midfielder’s standout performance against Wolves, Owen Hargreaves makes a notable comparison to Rodri, emphasizing his brilliance.
Once again, Gravenberch shone on the pitch, earning accolades from manager Arne Slot for his contributions in the defensive midfield alongside Alexis Mac Allister.
The 22-year-old has shown significant improvement this season, appearing revitalized in his role at Liverpool.
Earlier in the season, Jamie Carragher likened Gravenberch to Patrick Vieira, suggesting that he could emerge as a pivotal player for Liverpool under Slot’s guidance, who has successfully harnessed the talents of the former Bayern Munich player.
However, Hargreaves has expressed skepticism about Gravenberch’s potential to reach Rodri’s level in the defensive midfield position.
During a discussion on Premier League Productions, the former Liverpool player stated that Gravenberch lacks the specialization required to be Liverpool’s equivalent of Rodri, who is considered a crucial asset for Manchester City.
While Gravenberch has demonstrated versatility throughout his career, his recent success in a defensive role raises the possibility that he could develop into a player of Rodri’s caliber in the future.
Nonetheless, Hargreaves remains unconvinced, asserting, “He has done brilliantly well, but he is not a defensive midfield player, which is fine because when you are playing teams like this.
He is 190cm. He is 22-years-old, he has got everything. But he is not a specialist defensive midfield player.”
There is a distinction to be made. I consider him an exceptional midfielder, capable of playing box-to-box depending on the match context.
However, in crucial matches, such as those that determine the Premier League or Champions League titles, a specialist is essential.
Liverpool demonstrated this with Fabinho, while City did so with Rodri.
Gravenberch has the potential to offer Liverpool more than just a Rodri-like presence.
Currently, he stands out as one of Liverpool’s top performers, having begun the season in remarkable form and making a strong case for a spot in the starting lineup.
While the notion of Gravenberch being Liverpool’s equivalent to Rodri is intriguing, the former Ajax prodigy has the potential to exceed what the Spanish international brings to City. At just 22, Gravenberch is among the most talented midfielders in the Premier League, and if Slot can harness his potential and fully unlock his abilities, he could evolve into a true superstar.
