Barcelona president wants Sunday’s Clásico to be replayed if VAR error found…

The president of Barcelona is advocating for a replay of Sunday’s Clásico in the event of a VAR error being detected.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has called for a replay of Sunday’s Clásico match against Real Madrid if it is confirmed that a VAR mistake resulted in Lamine Yamal’s goal being incorrectly disallowed at the Bernabéu.

Yamal’s shot was cleared by Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin during a 1-1 tie in the first half, and without goal-line technology in LaLiga, VAR determined that the ball did not cross the line.

Despite this decision, Madrid ultimately emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline, including Jude Bellingham’s last-minute goal that extended their lead over Barça to 11 points at the top of the standings with only six matches remaining.

The team from Catalonia believed they had scored a goal, but a VAR review showed that Andriy Lunin had actually deflected the ball away. LaLiga remains the sole top league in Europe that has not implemented goal line technology.

“There were numerous contentious moments during the game, but one stands out as particularly significant and capable of altering the outcome,” Laporta stated in a press release issued on Monday.

“I am specifically addressing the ‘disallowed goal’ by Lamine Yamal. Our club is determined to ascertain the truth of the matter. Therefore, we will promptly request a thorough compilation of video footage and audio recordings related to the incident.

” After reviewing the documents, if the club identifies an error in the goal estimation, we will take appropriate actions to rectify the situation, including legal measures if necessary.”

In case the goal is confirmed to be valid, we will push for a rematch, similar to what occurred in a European match following a VAR mistake.

Real Madrid emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline, courtesy of a late goal by Jude Bellingham, marking his second game-winning goal in a Clásico this season.

Los Blancos currently hold an 11-point lead over their arch-rivals in the standings.

In case the legality of the goal is verified, we will proceed to ask for a rematch, similar to what occurred in a different European game because of a VAR mistake.

An example of this is the match between Anderlecht and Genk in the Belgian top-tier football league, which was replayed due to a VAR error resulting in a misinterpretation of the rules.

It is important to note that the VAR decision in that particular instance was linked to encroachment before a penalty kick, not a goal that was deemed invalid.

Meanwhile in Spain, a judge made a ruling last year stating that VAR did not provide the referee with all the possible images of a goal that was awarded to Atlético Madrid in their 3-3 draw against Espanyol, who were eventually relegated.

Although Antoine Griezmann’s goal was allowed, additional footage that was accessible to VAR and seemed to indicate that the ball did not cross the line was not shown to the match official.

Laporta also mentioned that there were “several other incidents” during the game that Barça disagreed with and “could have been reviewed by VAR.”

Following the defeat, Barça coach Xavi Hernández and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen both criticized the absence of goal-line technology in Spain, considering it to be “embarrassing.”
