Arteta is keen on acquiring a 22-year-old midfielder who showcased exceptional skills against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League last season.

Arteta is interested in recruiting a young midfielder who caught his attention with a strong performance against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League last season.

Arsenal is said to be eyeing a move for 22-year-old midfielder Alan Varela, who caught the attention of the Gunners during his standout performances against them in the UEFA Champions League last season.

Varela, who joined Porto from Boca Juniors for a reported fee of £6.8 million, made a significant impact at the Estádio do Dragão, featuring in 44 matches across various competitions and netting two goals.

The Argentine player was a key figure in Porto’s Champions League campaign, starting in all eight matches as they reached the Round of 16.

Despite Arsenal ultimately prevailing in a penalty shootout, Varela’s displays left a lasting impression on the North London club.

Tuttomercatoweb reports that Varela has caught the attention of Mikel Arteta’s team, along with other clubs, for a potential transfer this summer.

Despite a strong performance throughout the season, the North London club fell short of winning the Premier League title once again.

Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, they are determined to strengthen their squad in order to compete for the championship.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Thomas Partey’s future at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal is keen on recruiting a top-quality midfielder, with Varela being identified as a suitable candidate.

Porto has him under contract until 2028, however, a tempting offer might persuade the Primeira Liga team to let him go in the upcoming transfer window.

Besides Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and RB Leipzig are also reportedly interested in the Argentine player.
