Arsenal transfer news: Merino introduced, Gyokeres acquisition, Nketiah departure, and a potential replacement for Aaron Ramsdale – Five key transfer decisions Arsenal will undertake this week.

Arsenal has less than five days remaining to finalize their summer transfer activities, with several key decisions still pending.

Mikel Arteta, who previously expressed frustration over Premier League spending regulations that have hindered negotiations, has made only two permanent signings thus far.

David Raya has transitioned from a loan spell to a permanent contract, while Riccardo Calafiori stands as the sole new addition.

The Gunners are anticipated to contend for the title once more, with heightened expectations for trophy success this season, having not secured a major title since 2020, during Arteta’s initial half-season at the helm.

However, supporters are keen for the club to enhance their squad ahead of the impending transfer deadline on Friday night, while potential player sales also loom. In total, Arteta may face as many as nine decisions in the upcoming days.

Mikel Merino

One of the most pressing matters is securing a deal for Mikel Merino. The midfielder has been frequently associated with Arsenal, and failing to finalize a transfer after such a lengthy period could lead to frustration among fans.

Arsenal requires an additional midfielder for a demanding season that now includes extra Champions League fixtures.

Having previously played in the Premier League with Newcastle United, Merino is familiar with the domestic competition, making him a less risky option compared to other international players.

A striker

Will Arsenal acquire a forward before the window closes? If not, Arteta may contend that the team managed adequately without one last season, especially after bolstering Gabriel Jesus over the summer.

If they do pursue a striker, the challenge will be identifying the right player and negotiating a suitable fee.

Victor Osimhen would likely command a prohibitive price, while the Gunners appear cautious regarding transfer rumors surrounding Ivan Toney.

Sporting Lisbon’s prolific scorer Gyokeres could be a viable option, though he would not come cheaply.

Currently, the likelihood of signing a new striker seems diminished, but the final week of the transfer window can bring unexpected developments.

Ramsdale and a replacement

Another potential move that could unfold.

Nelson and Nketiah

With the departure of Emile Smith Rowe, Arsenal may see two more academy graduates leave as they navigate financial regulations.

Eddie Nketiah appears set to join Crystal Palace, following a failed transfer to Nottingham Forest. Arteta remains cautious until the transfer is finalized.

Reiss Nelson has attracted interest from several Premier League teams, including Leicester, but has not yet secured a move. The clock is ticking.

Kiwior, Zinchenko, and Tierney

It is likely that only one of Jakub Kiwior or Oleksandr Zinchenko will be sold, as losing both would leave Arsenal vulnerable at left-back.

Zinchenko’s brief appearance in the recent 2-0 victory over Wolves, coupled with Kiwior’s limited playing time, suggests that Zinchenko is the more likely candidate to depart.

Jurrien Timber is currently the top choice for the left-back position, and having three players for that role seems unnecessary, especially with Kiwior facing limited opportunities following Calafiori’s signing.

Kieran Tierney’s injury complicates Arsenal’s plans to offload players.

Thomas Partey

Despite scoring against Aston Villa, Thomas Partey may be the player sacrificed to achieve financial balance.

Arteta acknowledged that Partey’s frequent injuries last season were detrimental, and some supporters have expressed indifference towards his potential departure.

While his exit is not guaranteed, retaining him would enhance the midfield options for a lengthy season.

However, the risk of discontent over playing time looms, especially with Jorginho and Fabio Vieira also vying for minutes, creating a potential overcrowding issue.

The Saudi Pro League’s transfer window remains open beyond the European deadline, allowing Arsenal the possibility of selling players after their own window closes, should clubs from the Pro League express interest.

However, for players like Ramsdale, any late inquiries from Saudi clubs would ultimately be in vain.
