Arsenal has received a significant advantage in their pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres as Sporting CP modifies his transfer clause.

Recent reports from Portugal indicate that Arsenal is at the forefront of negotiations for the prolific goal scorer.

Gyokeres made the move to Sporting from Coventry City for approximately £20 million last summer and has been in exceptional form, scoring 43 goals in 50 appearances during the 2023/24 season.

His impressive performances have attracted interest from several elite clubs, including Liverpool, but Arsenal is currently viewed as the leading contender for his signature.

There have been recent indications that the Gunners may place a bid for him as early as this week.

However, acquiring the Swedish international is expected to be costly, as his contract includes an £86m release clause that Sporting is unwilling to alter.

Nevertheless, Portuguese publication Record reports that the club has provided a significant indication of their willingness to sell Gyokeres this summer by renegotiating the sell-on clause with Coventry in the player’s contract.

When the striker transferred to Sporting, the Sky Blues included a 15% sell-on clause, but Ruben Amorim’s team has since reduced that percentage.

It is alleged that the percentage of the clause has been reduced to 10%, resulting in Coventry receiving £8.6m instead of £12.9m if Gyokeres is sold for £86m this summer.

Arsenal is getting ready to make a bid for Viktor Gyokeres.

According to the report, Sporting were permitted to lower Gyokeres’ sell-on clause as part of a previous agreement with Coventry, but they will have to pay an additional €3m (£2.5m) for this modification.

The fee will be paid in two installments and will only result in a small saving for Sporting, but it indicates that Sporting are anticipating Gyokeres’ departure this summer.

Reports indicate that Arsenal is preparing to make an initial offer of around £60m for the 26-year-old, but it is unlikely to be sufficient to secure his transfer.

Mikel Arteta is in search of a replacement for Eddie Nketiah, who has been given the green light to seek a new club this summer.

Marseille, as well as several Premier League clubs, have shown interest in Nketiah, but none have been willing to meet Arsenal’s asking price.

Arteta is also seeking more competition for Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, as he feels that the duo may not be prolific enough to lead his team to a Premier League title.

Gyokeres has demonstrated his ability to find the back of the net, but the transition from Portuguese to top-tier English football is undoubtedly a significant one.

It will be intriguing to see if Arsenal will make an initial offer for Gyokeres in the upcoming days, as per reports.
