Arsenal is likely to activate a €100 million clause for a striker in the last days of the transfer window.

Arsenal is reportedly reigniting its interest in Viktor Gyökeres, as the Swedish striker’s impressive performance at Sporting CP has attracted the attention of several prominent European clubs.

With the transfer window closing soon, Sporting officials are increasingly worried that a team like Arsenal, Chelsea, or PSG might activate the player’s €100 million release clause, as noted by the Portuguese publication Correio da Manhã.

The 26-year-old forward has been in remarkable form, netting six goals and providing three assists in just four matches this season, following an outstanding previous season where he scored 43 goals and assisted 15 times in 50 appearances.

This level of performance has reignited interest from top clubs across Europe, with Arsenal closely monitoring the situation.

Initially, interest in Gyökeres waned after he underwent surgery on his left knee prior to preseason, raising concerns about his fitness.

However, his swift return to form has dispelled those worries, making him one of the most coveted strikers as the transfer window nears its end.

Sporting manager Rúben Amorim acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Gyökeres’ future, highlighting the €100 million release clause as a potential safeguard. “The clause provides us with some security,” Amorim stated, but he conceded that anything could happen as the transfer deadline approaches.

Gyökeres himself, while content with the prospect of remaining in Lisbon, acknowledged after his hat-trick against Farense that “anything can happen until the market closes.”

Arsenal’s search for a forward has been ongoing, with Mikel Arteta keen to bolster his squad’s attacking options.

Although the Gunners possess various attacking options, acquiring a prolific goalscorer like Gyökeres would provide the much-needed depth and versatility, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding Gabriel Jesus’s fitness for the season.

Sporting is concerned that Arsenal, leveraging their financial strength, might make a late bid to secure the Swedish forward.

It is important to highlight that Sporting’s main priority in the transfer market is to find a replacement in the event that Gyökeres departs.

Their leading candidate, Fotis Ioannidis, is reportedly nearing a contract extension with Panathinaikos, which adds complexity to Sporting’s strategy.

The transfer window in Portugal remains open until September 2nd, while it closes in England at 11 PM on August 30th, providing clubs like Arsenal a limited timeframe to act decisively.

At this moment, Sporting hopes their star striker will remain, but they are cautious of any last-minute approaches from Europe’s top clubs.
