Arsenal is ready to commence negotiations to secure a £56 million star, with personal terms reportedly settled.

Arsenal is set to initiate efforts to acquire one of Real Sociedad’s top talents, as reported by Noticias de Gipuzkoa.

The Gunners have secured one outfield player, Riccardo Calafiori, this summer, but are now considering a bid for Mikel Merino.

The club has reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms with the 28-year-old and is now readying a formal proposal.

Despite Sociedad’s attempts to retain Merino by offering an enhanced contract, it appears that this will not alter his position.

The proposal from Sociedad significantly diverges from what Arsenal is offering. Merino has expressed to Sociedad’s president, Jokin Aperribay, his desire to join the Gunners.

The resolution regarding Merino’s future may come in the next few days as Arsenal prepares to intensify their pursuit.

Arsenal is making progress toward securing a transfer deal for Merino. Over the past six years, he has been an integral part of Sociedad, making nearly 250 appearances and contributing 27 goals and 25 assists.

Additionally, Merino has demonstrated impressive defensive skills, leading Europe’s top-five leagues with 326 duels won last season.

In our opinion, the Euro 2024 champion would be a perfect addition for manager Mikel Arteta, providing a valuable option to rotate with Kai Havertz in central midfield.

Havertz is recognized as a more forward-thinking midfielder, while Merino also demonstrates strong capabilities in the left central midfield position. Last season, he recorded 13 goal contributions.

In addition to his ability to win duels, Merino has shown proficiency in recoveries and tackling. His defensive skills may prove advantageous in crucial matches.

Merino’s contract includes a £56 million release clause; however, Arsenal remains hopeful of acquiring him for £21 million, given that he is now in the final year of his contract.
