Arsenal has officially announced the departure of a highly talented young player, while Manchester United is reportedly interested in securing a deal.
Highly talented wonderkid set to leave Arsenal with Manchester United hopeful of agreement
Chido Obi-Martin has departed Arsenal, and Manchester United is now in talks to secure a deal with the promising young talent.
The 16-year-old forward was highly regarded within Arsenal’s youth system, showcasing his skills by scoring an impressive 29 goals in his last 11 matches for the club.
Several top clubs in Europe have expressed interest in signing Obi-Martin, with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund also in the running.
However, Manchester United has taken the lead in negotiations, having recently met with the player’s representatives.
Despite Arsenal’s efforts to offer Obi-Martin a new contract they deemed to be reasonable, the club officially confirmed his departure earlier this week.
The Gunners unveiled the names of their new first-year scholars for the upcoming 2024-25 season this Tuesday. Notably absent from the list was Martin-Obi.
Last season, the young player trained with the first-team and played for Arsenal’s Under-21 team in the Uefa Youth League.
Having represented both Denmark and England at youth level, Obi-Martin recently visited United’s training facility at Carrington.
Upon turning 17 in November, he will be eligible to sign a professional contract with an English club.
United’s Under-18 team had a successful season, winning three trophies including the Premier League North title and the Premier League National final against Chelsea, in addition to the Premier League Cup.
Erik ten Hag handed Ethan Wheatley his senior debut in April, where he scored in the national final against Chelsea and came off the bench late in the 4-2 win over Sheffield United.
Toby Collyer, a 20-year-old midfielder, was also part of the match day squad towards the end of the season.
In a display of trust from ten Hag, Collyer even wore the captain’s armband in the second half of a pre-season friendly against Rosenberg.
With the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo making the transition from the youth ranks to the first team, Collyer could be next in line.
‘You know me, I always want to create opportunities for young players, but they must earn it,’ ten Hag stated last week.
‘He has now earned his chance. Today he was in the starting XI, which is significant, and we will see how we can move forward.
We have seen what can happen with players like Garnacho and Mainoo last year, so the pathway is open for other players, and Toby is in line.’
