Arne Slot subtly hints at Liverpool’s contract situations involving Alexander-Arnold, Salah, and Van Dijk.
During a discussion about his all-time Champions League starting eleven, the Liverpool head coach included four current players, three of whom may be signaling a message to the club’s ownership regarding their contracts.
Slot selected Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah for his all-time Champions League XI, potentially highlighting concerns about their contractual statuses as all three are set to become free agents next summer.
The uncertainty surrounding their negotiations has left fans anxious about the possibility of losing all three players simultaneously at the end of the season.
By including these three in his lineup, Slot clearly expressed his admiration for them, alongside two other Liverpool figures—one active and one retired—while notably excluding legends like Zinedine Zidane, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, and Paolo Maldini.
In choosing Alisson as his goalkeeper, Slot remarked, “It’s clear why I would select Alisson; I currently work with him, and he played a crucial role in their Champions League victory a few years back. Since I’ve been with him, I’ve recognized his exceptional talent and the critical saves he consistently makes.
“He has been remarkable for Liverpool over the years, making this an easy choice.”
Slot further emphasized the contributions of Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk, stating to Amazon Prime, “Trent has been a vital player for Liverpool for many years, coming through the academy and winning the Champions League with this club.”
He added, “Virgil van Dijk deserves a spot. His influence on the team has been significant. When he and Alisson joined, it was the final piece the team needed.
“He is an impressive center-back, dominant in aerial duels, and possesses all the qualities expected of a top defender.”
Liverpool’s most iconic player, Arne Slot, included Steven Gerrard in a midfield trio with Luka Modric, supported by Sergio Busquets, a former Barcelona player now with Inter Miami.
Slot suggested that he might not have chosen Gerrard if he weren’t the manager of Liverpool.
He remarked, “If you had asked me this a year ago, I would likely have opted for Andres Iniesta… but now I believe I will select Steven Gerrard.
While Iniesta and Zinedine Zidane certainly merit inclusion, they had the advantage of playing alongside exceptional teammates.
“Gerrard had strong players around him as well, but I don’t think they reached the same heights as those two… yet he was undeniably extraordinary.”
Regarding Mohamed Salah, Slot stated, “It’s evident that Mo Salah deserves a spot. He has maintained an impressive level for eight or nine years.
In the recent history of this club, he has netted an incredible number of goals. His contributions have been truly remarkable.”
Arne Slot’s Champions League XI includes: Allison, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Gerard Pique, Frank de Boer, Sergio Busquets, Steven Gerrard, Luka Modric, Mohamed Salah, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo.
