Alan Shearer expressed his astonishment regarding a VAR decision during Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea.

Considering the overall performance, it is difficult to dispute that Liverpool and Arne Slot earned their win against Chelsea, despite the visitors showcasing significant skill at Anfield.

Although Chelsea, managed by Enzo Maresca, faced defeat, they demonstrated considerable progress under their new leadership, taking an early initiative against Liverpool.

In this context, Liverpool faced a significant challenge, especially since many critics had noted that Slot had yet to compete against a ‘top’ team despite his achievements in England thus far.

However, with Curtis Jones playing a pivotal role, Liverpool clearly demonstrated their ambition in the title race, a point they will aim to reinforce in their upcoming match in London.

Alan Shearer believes Liverpool were unjustly denied a penalty against Chelsea.

During a discussion on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Shearer voiced his surprise at a particular VAR decision made during Liverpool’s 2-1 win.

The VAR team overturned Liverpool’s second penalty, concluding that Robert Sanchez had not committed a foul against Curtis Jones.

In his conversation with Gary Lineker on the podcast, Shearer firmly stated that this decision was incorrect, asserting that the penalty should have been upheld.

He remarked, “We were informed about the high bar, and sometimes merely winning the ball or making contact is not sufficient.”

“If you take out the player, that can also be considered a foul or a penalty. That’s how I interpreted the situation.”

“Once the referee awarded the penalty, I believed it was unlikely he would reverse his decision. I was genuinely surprised that he did.”

Lineker commented, “I wasn’t particularly surprised. My perspective is that when two players are approaching each other, especially since Jones’ touch was slightly heavy, it turned into a near 50/50 situation.

With both players moving quickly and aggressively in opposite directions, the only way to deem it a foul would be if the player who arrives second is the one at fault.

I believe that once the goalkeeper reaches the ball first, they are essentially just colliding.”

Curtis Jones excelled in the match against Chelsea.

Fortunately, the contentious VAR decision did not significantly affect the game’s outcome, as Liverpool secured the victory despite being denied another penalty.

This decision is subjective and likely to spark debate.

It raises the question of whether VAR should have intervened, as it is difficult to assert that there was a ‘clear and obvious’ error.

In such cases, many might prefer to see the referee’s original decision maintained.

On another note, Jamie Carragher noticed something peculiar about Slot during Sunday’s match, as the manager seemed to be deeply invested in the significance of the game.

Nevertheless, Liverpool faces a series of challenging league matches ahead to maintain their impressive start.
