Uruguayan media assess Darwin Nunez’s performance after Liverpool striker is substituted at halftime against Brazil.
Darwin Nunez, the Liverpool striker, once again took the field for Uruguay in a vital 1-1 draw against Brazil during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Following a thrilling victory over Colombia just days prior, Marcelo Bielsa’s team secured a point against the world champions, marking a successful international break.
Nunez received commendations for his efforts in the match against Colombia, where, despite not scoring, his relentless work ethic was highlighted by the national press.
However, how did the Liverpool forward perform against Brazil?
Darwin Nunez delivers a subdued display against Brazil
Uruguay initially took the lead with Federico Valverde scoring, but Gerson equalized shortly after, resulting in a shared outcome for both teams.
Nunez started in the attacking trio alongside Maximiliano Araujo and Facundo Pellistri, putting in his usual hard work, yet he again did not find the back of the net.
The match offered limited opportunities, and Uruguay struggled to create chances for Nunez, leading to his substitution at halftime in favor of Rodrigo Aguirre.
El Observador rated his performance at five out of ten, acknowledging his defensive contributions while noting the lack of service from his teammates.
They commented: “He performed well defensively and was the team’s initial scorer. He had no opportunities to shoot.”
Nunez’s statistics against Brazil:
– 16 touches
– 8 out of 10 passes completed (80% accuracy)
– 2 out of 7 duels won
– 1 key pass
– 0 shots on target
The statistics indicate that Nunez was not heavily involved in the game against Brazil.
Nevertheless, he made an impact in the first half with his relentless running and defensive efforts.
The final international break of the year did not yield favorable results in terms of goal contributions for the unpredictable forward.
However, his inclusion in the starting lineup for both matches indicates that Bielsa appreciates his contributions to the squad.
We now shift our focus back to Liverpool, where a series of matches awaits that could significantly impact our season. No pressure, Darwin!
