Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta presented with opportunity to secure replacement in January following Bukayo Saka’s injury setback.
Following the injury to Bukayo Saka, Mikel Arteta is now in a position to pursue a replacement in the January transfer window.
Following Bukayo Saka’s injury, Arsenal may have the opportunity to acquire Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani on loan in January.
Despite Mikel Arteta’s side achieving a 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday, the match was marred by Saka’s first-half injury.
Arteta has confirmed that the winger will be sidelined for several weeks due to a hamstring issue, a significant setback given that Saka has contributed five goals and ten assists in the Premier League, outpacing all his teammates, who have not exceeded eight direct goal contributions.
Currently, the Gunners find themselves six points behind league leaders Liverpool, having played one additional match, raising concerns among fans about the potential for further distance from the Reds due to the injury to the 23-year-old.
However, reports from The Standard indicate that Arsenal may be presented with the chance to bring in PSG’s Muani on loan during the January transfer window.
Assessing Arsenal’s attacking options, Muani has struggled for playing time in France, starting only twice for the Ligue 1 champions this season, yet he has still managed to score two goals and provide one assist.
The 26-year-old boasts an average of 0.75 goals and assists per 90 minutes in the league this season, surpassing the tallies of Gabriel Martinelli (0.57), Kai Havertz (0.52), and Gabriel Jesus (0.5).
PSG has occasionally faced challenges in their attacking play with Muani at the forefront, suggesting he might thrive alongside a player like Havertz, who can draw defenders’ attention with his physical presence.
It remains uncertain whether Muani can be counted on for consistent performance if he receives regular playing time, and the unfortunate knee injury to Raheem Sterling, which is expected to keep him out for several weeks, could place additional pressure on Muani should he join Arsenal.
Muani deserves recognition for scoring 15 league goals and providing 11 assists for Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2022-23 season.
A loan agreement without a purchase obligation would present considerably lower risk.
Are Arsenal’s title aspirations fading?
This season, Arsenal has increasingly depended on Saka to break down opposing defenses, with the forward frequently generating opportunities from the right flank.
As one of the primary set-piece takers for his team, Saka’s absence could hinder Arsenal’s effectiveness in dead-ball situations, especially since Arteta’s squad has faced challenges in scoring from open play recently.
Earlier in the season, the north London club struggled to create chances when Martin Odegaard was unavailable, suggesting they might encounter similar issues without Saka.
With the Gunners unable to afford many more dropped points in the title race—only six more if 90 points is considered the target for Premier League success—Saka’s injury presents a significant obstacle.
However, this situation could also serve as an opportunity for Arteta to demonstrate his ability to devise innovative strategies and navigate challenges effectively.
