Liverpool is reportedly considering activating the £50 million release clause for Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, as they compete with Arsenal for the talented winger, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Having progressed through the youth ranks at the Basque club, the 22-year-old has emerged as one of La Liga’s top left-wingers in recent years.

Last season, he made a significant impact with 16 goal contributions in 31 league matches, playing a crucial role in helping his team secure a fifth-place finish and a spot in the Europa League.

Williams was also instrumental for the Spanish national team during their European Championship victory this summer, scoring the opening goal in the final against England, which ended in a 2-1 win for Spain.

Despite a slow start to the current season, Williams remains an essential part of Ernesto Valverde’s lineup.

Fichajes reports that both Liverpool and Arsenal are keen on acquiring him, with the financial capability to meet his release clause and salary expectations.

Barcelona has shown interest as well, but their financial constraints put them at a disadvantage compared to Liverpool and Arsenal in this pursuit.

Additionally, Newcastle United is also monitoring the situation, making the acquisition of Williams a competitive endeavor for both Premier League clubs.

Arsenal has faced challenges in the early part of the season, particularly in finding the back of the net, while Liverpool boasts a robust attacking lineup with ample depth on the left wing.

Williams would likely receive more consistent first-team opportunities at Arsenal compared to Liverpool.

Consequently, a transfer to the Emirates Stadium would be more advantageous for him.

Nonetheless, it is still uncertain which club will ultimately secure his services if Williams decides to depart from Athletic Bilbao next year.
