Update on Virgil van Dijk’s contract: Liverpool is set to propose a new deal for their captain.

Liverpool is reportedly planning to initiate contract discussions with Virgil van Dijk before the year concludes.

Since his transfer from Southampton in January 2018, the Netherlands international has made 273 competitive appearances for the club.

Van Dijk has played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s success, contributing to their victories in the 2018-19 Champions League and the 2019-20 Premier League.

Despite turning 33 this summer, he continues to be an integral member of the Liverpool lineup, often being one of the first players selected.

However, there are uncertainties regarding his future at the club beyond the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.

Liverpool is poised to present Van Dijk with a new contract. Currently, there is a risk of losing him on a free transfer, as his current deal is set to expire next summer.

Last month, Van Dijk acknowledged that there had been “no change” in his contract status but expressed that he remains “very calm” amid the ongoing uncertainty.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool is eager to negotiate a new deal with Van Dijk and plans to engage in discussions with him before the year ends.

While the club is prepared to make a new offer, they will also seek to understand his willingness to extend his tenure at Anfield.

Ultimately, the centre-back will need to determine whether he wishes to continue with Liverpool or pursue new opportunities as he approaches the latter stages of his career.

Regarding Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both players find themselves in similar situations, with their contracts also set to expire at the end of the season.

If Liverpool cannot reach an agreement with Van Dijk, he will be permitted to negotiate with foreign clubs for a pre-contract arrangement starting next year.

A recent report indicated that Liverpool is committed to finalizing a new contract with Salah before the conclusion of the calendar year.

Regarding Alexander-Arnold, the club is optimistic about securing a long-term agreement to fend off interest from Real Madrid.
