Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addresses two transfer matters as Mikel Merino arrives for a medical examination.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addresses two transfer developments as Mikel Merino arrives for a medical examination. The club is gearing up for a hectic week in the transfer market.
Arteta emphasizes that there is still ample time for the Gunners to finalize their long-standing interest in Merino, who is on his way to London to undergo a medical assessment ahead of his anticipated move to the Emirates Stadium.
Merino has attracted Arsenal’s attention throughout the summer, and a reported agreement of £34 million has been reached between the two clubs.
When asked for an update on Merino’s situation, Arteta stated, “I cannot comment on any player who is not part of our squad. There is still time left in the transfer window.”
Regarding the potential completion of the £34 million deal, he added, “I’m not certain. Our primary focus is on the players currently with us.”
The 42-year-old also mentioned the possibility of further activity in the transfer market, saying, “One must remain vigilant and ready, as unexpected developments can arise.”
Merino’s potential signing may be financed by several departures before the transfer window closes on August 30.
Eddie Nketiah has attracted interest from Premier League side Nottingham Forest, who are reportedly preparing a bid for the England striker.
ESPN suggests that a £30 million offer is likely to be accepted by the north London club.
However, Arteta cautioned both Nketiah and Forest that any agreement will only proceed if it is beneficial for all involved.
He remarked on the 25-year-old’s situation, “I expect Eddie to train with us today and be ready for tomorrow. Whatever transpires will occur if it is advantageous for everyone.”
Arsenal is preparing for a hectic final week of the transfer window, with the acquisition of Merino taking precedence in the coming days.
The 28-year-old, who previously had a short stint at Newcastle, is reportedly set to sign a four-year contract.
One of the major narratives to watch in the upcoming weeks will be how Arteta integrates all his midfield players into a cohesive unit.
There is anticipation that Merino will join Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in central midfield, leaving the roles of Thomas Partey and Jorginho uncertain.
Arteta also indicated that Jurrien Timber could be considered for a midfield role, despite his background primarily as a right-back or center-back following his transfer from Ajax.
When asked if the Dutch player, who missed most of last season due to an ACL injury, is included in Arsenal’s midfield plans, Arteta replied: “Yes, he is. He can operate in multiple positions.
“His adaptability is one of his key assets. He had some impressive minutes the other day. Being able to assess and respond to the squad’s needs in real-time is highly valued.”
