Thiago Alcantara, the ex-Liverpool, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich midfielder, has declared his retirement from professional football at 33 years old after parting ways with Anfield.
He became a free agent on June 30 after his contract with Liverpool ended, having faced injury challenges during his four-year tenure with the club since departing Bayern in 2020.
Despite his injury history, Thiago was anticipated to receive multiple offers to continue playing, with a potential return to Barcelona briefly discussed.
Thiago, who is 33 years old, was rumored to be drawing interest from clubs in Italy like Inter Milan, as well as potential moves to Saudi Arabia or North America.
Nonetheless, Thiago has decided to retire from professional football and announced on social media on Monday that he is hanging up his boots after a successful 13-year career.
In a brief yet heartfelt message, Thiago stated: “I am always ready to give back what I have received and I am thankful for the time I have had.
” Thank you, football. And to everyone who supported me and helped me grow as a player and person. Until we meet again, Thiago.”
Throughout his career, Thiago achieved great success as a midfielder, earning praise for his class, skill, and adaptability in England, Germany, and Spain.

Throughout his career, he made 488 club appearances, scoring 48 goals, and winning an impressive 32 trophies.
He achieved Champions League and Club World Cup victories with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, as well as securing seven consecutive Bundesliga titles with the latter and four La Liga titles during his time at Camp Nou.
Thiago also celebrated successes in DFB-Pokal, Copa del Rey, German Super Cup, and Supercopa de Espana, in addition to adding an EFL Cup, FA Cup, and Community Shield to his collection during his tenure at Liverpool.
Thiago did not feature in any of Spain’s major tournament-winning squads, but he did secure victories in both the Under-17 and Under-21 Euros with La Roja.
He went on to earn 46 senior caps and participate in Euro 2016, the 2018 World Cup, and Euro 2020.
On an individual level, Thiago was selected for the FIFA FIFPro World XI and UEFA Team of the Year in 2020. He was later included in the 2021-22 PFA Premier League Team of the Season.
