Liverpool forward drops significant hints about his potential departure, leading Arne Slot to consider selling Darwin Nunez.

Arne Slot is being supported in his decision to offload Darwin Nunez, as the Liverpool forward drops a strong hint about his potential departure.

The new manager is now looking to secure a €100m-rated upgrade from Serie A as a replacement for Nunez.

Despite his undeniable effort and physical prowess, Nunez, who is 24 years old, has struggled to make a significant impact at Anfield.

While his speed and ability to make runs behind the defense make him a constant threat, his finishing skills have not shown improvement since his move from Benfica. Additionally, his composure in front of the goal remains questionable.

Nunez has scored 18 goals this season and a total of 33 in his two years at Anfield. While this is not a bad record, it could have been much better.

Nunez is second only to Erling Haaland (32) in the number of big chances missed this season, with 27. Haaland has an impressive shot conversion rate of 22.3%, while Nunez is far behind at just 10.4%.

During Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday, Nunez’s performance was a perfect summary of his time at the club. He came off the bench in the second half and had opportunities to score and assist.

Unfortunately, he mistimed his run and was caught offside before setting up Mohamed Salah for a goal. Nunez also missed a one-on-one chance by shooting straight at the goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario.

Nunez’s lack of consistency in front of goal has caught the attention of Reds icon Jamie Carragher. In a recent discussion about the Uruguayan, Carragher proposed that incoming manager Arne Slot might need to take a decisive step by replacing Nunez early on to set the tone for his tenure.

According to Carragher’s comments on Sky Sports, he expressed his viewpoint by stating, “I have reached a point with Nunez where I believe there is no longer a question to be asked.

Despite my initial hopes for his success after two years at the club, I now realize that while he displays dedication, work rate, and occasionally contributes with goals and assists, it is crucial for Liverpool this season to have a reliable scorer in key matches such as those against Old Trafford, Goodison Park, and in European competitions like Atalanta. This is a critical juncture in the title race, and there is no room for delays or excuses.”

The analyst stated: “When it comes to Nunez and the future direction of the club, I believe that after two years, we have all experienced situations where a new player joins and we discuss their progress in the first year, noting improvements. It seemed like Nunez was on the right track at the beginning of the season, but progress has now stalled.

“Reflecting on the past two years, I don’t anticipate a significant development in his performance. What we have witnessed so far is likely what we can expect. He may create problems and his finishing can be inconsistent.

“I doubt that his current level will be sufficient to secure major trophies, so a crucial decision regarding his future should be made in the upcoming summer.”

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport later reported that Slot is keen on acquiring Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen is anticipated to depart Napoli this summer, with a release clause of €130m attached to his contract. The report from Italy suggests that Slot and Liverpool are optimistic about securing a deal for a more reasonable fee of €100m/£86m. PSG and Chelsea are also monitoring Osimhen’s situation, albeit to a lesser extent.

However, Liverpool would only consider a transfer of this magnitude if Nunez were to depart. With Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo already in the squad, signing another striker would seem unnecessary.

Following Liverpool’s victory over Spurs, during which Nunez received criticism for his performance, the Uruguayan has hinted at a potential departure.

Nunez has made a noticeable change on his personal Instagram account by removing all Liverpool-related images, except for the ones featuring his former club Benfica and his national team, Uruguay.

This action could be interpreted as an emotional response to the criticism he faced after his performance on Sunday. On the other hand, it could also indicate that Nunez sees his future elsewhere and not at Anfield.

Regarding potential destinations for Nunez, there have been rumors linking him to Spanish powerhouse Barcelona, who are reportedly considering him as a potential successor to the 35-year-old Robert Lewandowski.
