Neil Jones expressed his astonishment at the news of Liverpool potentially appointing Gary O’Neil as their new manager.

Gary O’Neil is rumored to have been interviewed by Liverpool as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Liverpool is considering Gary O’Neil from Wolverhampton Wanderers as a possible successor to Jurgen Klopp, according to reports.

It has been reported that Gary O’Neil is being considered for the managerial position at Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

Gary O’Neil, who has successfully guided AFC Bournemouth and Wolves to Premier League safety, is being considered for the managerial role at Liverpool.

Liverpool is considering a bold move by considering Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, journalist Neil Jones reports.

With Klopp set to leave his position as head coach at the end of the 2023/24 season, Liverpool is preparing for a new era. While there have been links to other managerial replacements such as Ruben Amorim and Arne Slot, O’Neil has emerged as the latest candidate. The Englishman has had an impressive season with Wolves, successfully securing their Premier League safety by mid-April.

Recent reports suggest that Liverpool has interviewed O’Neil for the head coach role. The 40-year-old currently leads Wolves and aims to achieve a top-half finish for his team this season.

O’Neil’s coaching journey has seen him work with Liverpool’s youth teams and later join Scott Parker at AFC Bournemouth. Eventually, he took over as the head coach of the Cherries after Parker’s departure in August 2022. However, O’Neil’s time at Bournemouth came to an end when he was let go by the pending Reds sporting director. Despite successfully guiding the south coast team to safety, O’Neil found himself replacing Julen Lopetegui at Wolves.

Discussing the potential appointment of O’Neil at Wolves, journalist Neil Jones expressed his thoughts on The Redmen TV. Jones acknowledged that such a move would be daring for both the manager and the club. He also delved into the dynamics between O’Neil and the Liverpool board, suggesting that it may be premature for them to collaborate:

“The relationships involved are intriguing. Michael Edwards and David Woodfine have a connection through Portsmouth. However, Richard Hughes, who was the technical director at Bournemouth, opted not to hire O’Neil and instead appointed Andoni Iraola.

This indicates that their friendship doesn’t necessarily guarantee preferential treatment. Hughes has demonstrated in the past that meritocracy prevails. While O’Neil could be an intriguing candidate in the future, I believe it would be a highly audacious move for both Liverpool and him to pursue that path. It seems too early for such a decision.”

Liverpool’s shortlist includes a fresh face in the form of Lille manager Paulo Fonseca. The 51-year-old has reportedly engaged in informal discussions with the club.

Klopp’s departure has prompted the Reds to explore potential replacements, with Fonseca emerging as a strong candidate. Fonseca’s successful stints at clubs like Shakhtar Donetsk, AS Roma, and Lille have caught the attention of Liverpool, who are closely monitoring his progress.

British fans were particularly impressed by Lille’s recent performance in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals against Aston Villa, where they narrowly lost to Unai Emery’s team in a penalty shootout.
