O’Neil’s coaching journey has seen him work with Liverpool’s youth teams and later join Scott Parker at AFC Bournemouth. Eventually, he took over as the head coach of the Cherries after Parker’s departure in August 2022. However, O’Neil’s time at Bournemouth came to an end when he was let go by the pending Reds sporting director. Despite successfully guiding the south coast team to safety, O’Neil found himself replacing Julen Lopetegui at Wolves.

Discussing the potential appointment of O’Neil at Wolves, journalist Neil Jones expressed his thoughts on The Redmen TV. Jones acknowledged that such a move would be daring for both the manager and the club. “The relationships involved are intriguing. Michael Edwards and David Woodfine have a connection through Portsmouth. However, Richard Hughes, who was the technical director at Bournemouth, opted not to hire O’Neil and instead appointed Andoni Iraola.

This indicates that their friendship doesn’t necessarily guarantee preferential treatment. Hughes has demonstrated in the past that meritocracy prevails. While O’Neil could be an intriguing candidate in the future, I believe it would be a highly audacious move for both Liverpool and him to pursue that path. It seems too early for such a decision.”

Liverpool’s shortlist includes a fresh face in the form of Lille manager Paulo Fonseca. The 51-year-old has reportedly engaged in informal discussions with the club.
