Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjær address rumors of their potential return to the vacant Sunderland job…

There have been speculations about Roy Keane potentially taking on the role of Sunderland manager once again. However, it is important to consider whether this aligns with the club’s long-term vision and if it could potentially create unrest among the fans. It is worth noting that Keane previously managed Sunderland, achieving promotion but ultimately departing with a win rate of 42% after 100 games.

A new manager, in the vein of Keane’s approach, has the potential to shake up the team’s progress and growth with a fresh player strategy.

Former Sunderland manager Roy Keane is reportedly being considered for a return to the position as the club seeks a long-term solution for the upcoming season.

Mike Dodds has taken on the role of interim manager until the season’s end following the dismissal of former manager Michael Beale after a brief two-month tenure. Dodds previously held this position between Tony Mowbray’s departure and Beale’s appointment, achieving victories in both games during that period. However, the team has struggled in his current stint, losing three consecutive matches since Beale’s exit.

Various individuals have been mentioned in discussions regarding the Sunderland manager position. According to the Sunderland Echo, Will Still, the head of Stade de Reims, caught the attention of the Black Cats after Mowbray’s departure. Additionally, a local journalist also brought up the possibility of Roy Keane, the former captain of Manchester United, being considered for the role. Keane has responded to this suggestion.

According to BBC Radio Newcastle’s Nick Barnes, who spoke on Total Sport, Keane has been actively putting himself forward to clubs with managerial vacancies. Barnes also mentioned that another former Black Cats boss is being considered.

“There have been several names thrown into consideration. We are aware of Alex Neil’s interest, as he is currently making a strong effort to win over Sunderland.

“Roy Keane has been vocal about his willingness to return, although I believe it would depend on the ownership model. If the ownership situation was suitable, I could envision him coming back, but I don’t think he would under the current ownership.”

Barnes mentioned that both Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Scott Parker have expressed their interest in the position. There are several candidates being considered, but we will have to wait and see. If the club was considering Will Still in December/January, it is likely that they will still be looking for a coach with similar qualities. A lot will depend on what happens in the summer, particularly with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and whether he remains at the club.

“Obviously, it seems like he will stay, but in football, you never know. It remains to be seen if there will be more funds available for the head coach and if they will be more flexible in terms of signing experienced players.”

The former Irish international and Solskjær responded to these claims with a lighthearted post on Instagram.

He has expressed his desire to return to football management, stating that he would like to get back into the role. The last time he held a managerial position was with Ipswich Town in 2011.

Roy Keane’s tenure as Sunderland manager

Taking charge in August 2006, the former Sunderland manager assumed the role with great success. In his debut season as a manager, he led the team to promotion back to the Premier League and was honored with the Championship manager of the year award.

However, Keane later admitted that he was fortunate to have been appointed in the first place.

During his second full season as manager of the Mackems, Keane decided to resign midway through. His final match as the head of the Black Cats marked his 100th game in charge, with a total of 42 victories during his century of matches.

The potential appointment of Roy Keane would be an ill-advised move by the Sunderland board. The club’s future strategy revolves around recruiting young and talented players who can elevate them through the leagues and generate substantial profits through their eventual sale. Bringing in Keane, or someone similar, as their next manager would contradict this ideology and vision. Consequently, fans would begin to question the decisions made by Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman.

Queens Park Rangers made a critical error by hiring Gareth Ainsworth, whose football style greatly differed from the abilities of most of the players on the team when he initially joined. Although it initially yielded positive results and helped them avoid relegation, the team faced difficulties this season when things started to go awry. Upon appointing Marti Cifuentes, they realized that the players at their disposal didn’t fully align with their desired approach.

Now, they are gradually getting back on track to where they should be. However, if it hadn’t been for the decision to bring in Ainsworth, they could have reached their desired position sooner. Similarly, appointing Keane as Sunderland’s next permanent manager could potentially have detrimental consequences.
