A new potential candidate for the Sunderland manager position has surfaced following an intriguing revelation. As Sunderland continues to struggle this season, the focus has shifted towards the future, with finding a suitable replacement for the managerial role becoming a top priority.

Sunderland had high hopes after narrowly missing out on a trip to Wembley last season. They appeared poised to make significant progress and contend for promotion this year. However, a managerial crisis has derailed their aspirations, leaving them languishing far behind the top six in the Championship.

In December 2023, Sunderland parted ways with Tony Mowbray after a successful season where they finished sixth. Despite his previous achievements, a poor run of form led to his departure after 461 days at the club. Assistant coach Mike Dodds took over temporarily while the search for a new manager began.

Two weeks later, Michael Beale was appointed as Mowbray’s successor. Coming from a stint at Rangers, where he was recently let go, Beale had experience in the second tier with QPR. However, fans were not convinced by the new appointment.

Unfortunately, Beale’s tenure did not go as planned, with Sunderland only managing to secure fourteen points from eleven league games under his management. A 2-1 loss to Birmingham, led by Mowbray, was the final blow. After just 63 days in charge, Beale was sacked, and Sunderland had to start the search for a new manager once again.

Sunderland’s upcoming manager might aim “to showcase his abilities”

As reported by L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), a prominent agent in the UK informed the French media that Will Still’s next step could involve joining a Championship team.

The agent mentioned to the publication, “Premier League clubs are currently more hesitant to appoint young, inexperienced managers, regardless of their talent. Therefore, it seems logical for him to secure a position at a Championship club initially to demonstrate his capabilities”.

The report from Sports Witness also highlights Sunderland’s upcoming managerial vacancy at the end of the season.

This reflects a recent shift in Championship clubs’ choices for managers, favoring promising talents from overseas over the more traditional options. QPR and Sheffield Wednesday’s decisions to appoint Marti Cifuentes and Danny Rohl have proven successful in turning their seasons around.

Still, currently managing Stade Reims in France since October 2022, is close to securing a spot in European competitions, with a release clause of €5million that could be activated by interested clubs this summer.

As Jack Clarke prepares to depart Sunderland, the club may receive a substantial sum. While finding a replacement player is crucial, investing in one of Europe’s top emerging managers could be a wise move for the club.
